Coming Fall 2025: New Engineering Data Analytics Course

We’re excited to announce a new technical elective course in Industrial Engineering at Clemson:

IE 4910/6910 – Cognitive Systems

Launching in Fall 2025, this course is designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in exploring how data analytics supports performance in complex, real-world systems.

With a strong emphasis on data-driven insight, Cognitive Systems prepares students to work across domains where decision-making, adaptability, and system resilience are key.

What Students Will Learn

In Cognitive Systems, student will explore concepts such as:

  • Systems resilience
  • Adaptive performance
  • Distribution cognition in complex socio-technical systems

These ideas will be applied to high-impact industries like healthcare, nuclear power, and aviation, where safety, efficiency, and human factors play critical roles.

Students will use methods of knowledge elicitation-such as interviews and real-world observations-to uncover how people and systems adapt under pressure, and how data can be used to design for resilient performance.

Course Format:

This course blends technical and applied learning through:

  • Lectures
  • Topical discussions
  • Case studies
  • A hands-on research project

Students will come away with both conceptual understanding and practical tools for analyzing, modeling, and improving performance in data-rich environments.

What’s Next

The launch of Cognitive Systems (IE 4910/6910) reflects Clemson IE’s commitment to prepare students for the evolving demands of modern industry. Offered as a technical elective with no prerequisites, this course is open to all students eager to deepen their understanding of data analytics in complex systems.
