Clemson IE is pleased to announce that Jean-François Boujut, PhD, from Grenoble Institute of Technology (Grenoble INP) will be the first guest presenter for the Spring 2015 – IE Seminar Series. The seminar will be held on Monday, February 23rd from 12:20pm – 1:10pm in Riggs 305. His seminar is entitled “Industrial Engineering at Grenoble – Research and Education.”
Abstract: Industrial Engineering started in Grenoble in the late 80’s. At that time a group of top managers and CEOs of some big companies converged towards the idea that we needed in France a high level engineering school dedicated to industrial performance. They felt the necessity to have in their companies potentially high-level managers able to deal with complex industrial issues at the strategic and operational levels. Grenoble has been chosen due to its scientific and industrial environment together with a long history of high-level interdisciplinary scientific research and education. The Industrial Engineering School was born in 1990 with the strong support of the ministry of education and the local and regional politics.
The school is part of Grenoble Institute of Technology and has the unique specificity to be also associated to the University of social sciences (Université Pierre Mendes France). For the very beginning the curriculum was interdisciplinary with 40% of social sciences and 60% of engineering sciences. Our students are taught sociology, management, communication, economy, in addition to more classical topics, OR, Math, Production management, etc. My talk will go more into details and I will be ready to answer questions on that point.
From the research point of view, we have had the chance to create an interdisciplinary lab in 2006. G-SCOP is may be the biggest lab in France on the topic. We are about 160 with more than 60 tenure academic staff. This lab has also the unique specificity to host design research teams and production research teams. We have 6 research groups that range from theoretical research (combinatory optimization) to very applied and interdisciplinary one. Particularly we have a long history of collaboration with social sciences.

Bio: Jean-François Boujut, PhD, is Professor in Engineering Design at Grenoble Institute of Technology (Grenoble INP). He is member of the academic staff of the Industrial Engineering School of Grenoble INP and holds the responsibility of the innovation and creativity courses. He is also co leader of the Industrial Innovation Chair of Grenoble INP foundation. He is former student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (France) and holds an Agrégation of Mechanical Engineering and a M.S. degree in Mechanics from University Paris 6. He earned his PhD in 1993 in Mechanical Engineering and his Habilitation in 2001 in the same discipline. He is leading the collaborative design group at G-SCOP laboratory and has been at the head of the AIP-PRIMECA technological platform for 7 years. He is currently at the head of the advisory board of the Design Society.
