Inside Clemson

Raymond C. Sawyer, Professor Emeritus of Performing Arts

Raymond C. Sawyer passed away on May 8, 2023.

Hired at Clemson University on August 15, 1974, Dr. Sawyer taught in the Department of Performing Arts and retired in 2006 after 31 years of service.

Although he had many accolades during his tenure at Clemson, one notable accomplishment was his production of the play “American Buffalo,” which was chosen from hundreds of plays to be performed at the Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington, DC, as well as at Piccolo Spoleto in Charleston, South Carolina.  The proceeds of the show helped establish a scholarship for aspiring actors and actresses at Clemson University Performing Arts Center.

Immediately following his retirement, Dr. Sawyer joined the Emeritus College where he served for more than 17 years.

Dr. Sawyer retired from Clemson University as an Emeritus Centennial Professor and he and his wife Sharon eventually moved to Richmond Hill, Georgia, to be close to their daughter, Alison, and her family.

His obituary will be posted when available.
