NIH Data Management Plans

NIH is implementing a new Data Management and Sharing Policy effective for ALL applications to NIH due on or after January 25, 2023. Data management plans (DMP) must be submitted with any application that generates scientific data. Plans must specify what methods or approaches/repositories will be used for data sharing, determine and budget for any costs related to data management and sharing, and describe how investigators will ensure compliance with the plan, if awarded.

SAVE THE DATE: NIH, in conjunction with the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) will conduct an informational session on the new policy on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 3 p.m. Register here. You’ll need a COGR account to register. If you don’t already have an account, request one here with your clemson.edu email address. The request could take five days to process.

The Division of Research and CU Libraries are also hosting a zoom presentation about the requirements on January 18th at 3pm. You can register for this presentation (which will be recorded and made available) through our RCR events or Clemson Events Calendar. If you attend the live session, you are eligible for 1 RCR credit.

Change in reviewing hazardous chemical use in vertebrate animals

Effective 12/16/2022, an IBC review is NOT required for hazardous chemical use in vertebrate animals. The IACUC AUP has been modified to include the questions previously incorporated in the IBC form, and the safety review will be conducted in conjunction with the IACUC review. Any IBC reviews that were conducted for hazardous chemicals prior to 12/16/22 will not need to be renewed.

For additional details please see the email sent 12/14/22—If you did not receive the email, please notify us at iacuc@clemson.edu and we will add you to our email list.

You have a cheat sheet available for faster Safety reviews!

The Office of Occupational and Environmental Safety (OES) has developed a “pre review” form you can complete before you submit your AUP if you are using Hazardous Chemicals. You have a copy in the announcement email dated 12/14/22, and we will post it on the IACUC Forms site by 12/16/22.

NSF Safe and Inclusive Environment Requirement for Field and Off-Site Research

Effective January 31, 2023, proposals submitted to the NSF will require PI certification that there is a plan in place for addressing abusive behavior, harassment, and in appropriate conduct. The Division of Research is working to develop tools for PIs to use in creating a plan.

We encourage you to attend the RCR workshop on January 23, Sound, Safe, and Scientific Fieldwork: Contemporary Issues and Best Practices.

This workshop will discuss these issues and promote best practices that may help as you design your plan. You can see more information on this workshop here: https://media.clemson.edu/research/orc/rcr/BrownBagSpring%202023.pdf

New Policy for Amendment Reviews

We have a new policy, 2.9, Veterinary Verification and Consultation (VVC) Review. This policy supplements policy 2.6, Change to Animal Activities Previously Approved by the IACUC (Amendments to AUPs).

VVC is a unique way of quickly approving some changes that are allowable under the PHS policy, but there are limitations as defined by the federal oversight agency, OLAW. This policy was developed to supplement policy 2.6 by providing more specific guidance on what can be reviewed under VVC. Please consult with the University Veterinarian if you have questions about whether a proposed amendment can be reviewed via VVC.

Thursday, October 13, 2022—Avoiding Plagiarism in Funded Research

Typically, plagiarism comes up in institutions of higher education as it relates to undergraduate course work – purchasing final papers from online sources, students copying from each other, failing to paraphrase sources or cite them properly, etc. However, even well-intentioned researchers make some common mistakes with their funded projects that can be classified as plagiarism, which puts their grants and Clemson’s reputation at risk. In this session, I will go over these common mistakes and the real-world consequences they can carry, and give researchers strategies to stay safe and avoid accusations of plagiarism.

Presenter – Megan Sheffield, Data Services Librarian

Target audience – Faculty, staff, postdocs, and students

Location – In Person 413 Cooper Library (Scholars Lab)
