Join us on Friday, October 29th from 2:00-3:00 in the Watt Auditorium for a conversation with highly successful C-suite leaders—all Clemson alumni—in technical fields to learn more about their experiences, philosophies, and advice on how to prepare to be a leader in your field.

Many students who enter engineering and technical majors in college lack exposure or learnings on leadership skills. There is a need to help engineers get these critical life skills early in their careers. The concept for Engineering Leadership (www.engineering-leadership.com) was created with an emphasis on an engineering-minded framework that teaches five key elements at the heart of leadership: Optimism, Trust, Courage, Humility and Love. Surrounding that are four components with three subsets, for a total of 17 aspects, or constants, of successful leadership to create a full leadership spectrum.

The premise of this Engineering Leadership mindset is that despite the complexity of leadership, it can be broken down into fundamentals that provide a framework to lead effectively. We believe leaders are built, not born. By focusing on the constants, we can build strong technically-focused leaders who are prepared for future success.

This event is sponsored by the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS) in partnership with Engineering Leadership (www.engineering-leadership.com).

Meet the Staff: Beth Anne Johnson

Beth Anne Johnson serves as the Associate Director for the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program in the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences at Clemson University. Since the program’s establishment in 1995, the WISE program has helped thousands of women successfully gain employment in male dominated industries. This award-winning program pairs first year, female-identifying students with female upperclassman to guide the
young women in their college experience. While teaching essential skills alongside academics, Beth Anne helps educate and prepare women to pursue and secure successful careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematical (STEM) fields through outreach, recruitment, and college support.

As a social scientist and researcher, Beth Anne explores female identity and leisure. Currently, she is investigating female leisure spaces in male dominated sports. She finds that her research interests better prepare her to coach young women in crafting their understanding of self, their worth and their relation to the world.

Currently, Beth Anne serves as the President Elect of WEPAN and will begin serving as president
for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Alongside the executive leadership team, she is honored to serve
the WEPAN community. She is looking forward to building a strategic plan and stewardship
strategies that exhibit and oversee the continuation of growth WEPAN has experienced over
the last 30 years.

When Beth Anne is not at work, she is adventuring with her family or in her garden growing
delicious foods and flowers.

What her co-workers have to say about her:

“She works hard to make sure we all sparkle and shine, and it is so encouraging. She is an awesome leader for her WISE girls and we’re lucky to have her on our team!” -Maegan Hinson

“Beth Anne is a ray of sunshine. She always has a positive word/perspective to share with our team and students. She is fun and creative and very innovative. She loves our CU students, and her passion shows. We enjoy having her on our team.” -Serita Acker

“Beth Anne, is new to our team but is truly a gem and asset. I thank her for always sharing her insight and knowledge with us and the students. And always showing Grace, my friend.” -Lisa Jackson

Girl Scouts and Friends Day is THIS Saturday!

Calling all Middle Schoolers!

Clemson is welcoming middle schoolers virtually to our annual Girl Scouts and Friends Day on October 16th, and we could not be more excited! If you know a student in middle school, whether or not they are affiliated with a girl scout troop, send this information along and encourage them to sign up soon.

Meet the Staff: Lisa Jackson

Lisa JacksonLisa Jackson is the Associate Director of Programs for Educational Enrichment and Retention, PEER. She joined the PEER & WISE team in 2014.

She is a proud alumna of Benedict College, one of the finest HBCUs in South Carolina, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Economics Business Administration. It was there she realized education was the tool she needed to change the world. Therefore, in May 2021, she received her MBA here at Clemson University to be the agent of change for her family, community and country.

She said one of her greatest achievements while in this role occurred in 2017; the program received an award from NAMEPA, Inc., the National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates. This award recognizes retention programs that have increased the participation of students from historically underrepresented (URM) populations in engineering. This accomplishment allowed PEER & WISE to join other prestigious public engineering research institutions. Subsequently, the morale and participation of engineering students at the university have vastly increased.

“My personal philosophy is to treat others as you want to be treated. Being kind to others costs nothing but can leave every place you travel and every individual you encounter better because of you. When I engage with PEER mentors, I use those moments as opportunities to plant and water seeds of wisdom, kindness, love and compassion. I believe with this mixture, we will make lifetime changes and eventually make this world a beautiful garden, a better place.”

What her co-workers have to say about her:

“Lisa has such a kind spirit, she is always willing to help, and she’s a great leader to students in her care.” -Maegan Hinson

“Mama” Lisa is hard working and loves our children, our Clemson students!” -Serita Acker

“I love to see Ms. Lisa in action! Whether she is working a room or supporting her students, Lisa puts heart into everything she does. She is a tremendous resource to me in stewarding our students and together, we can do anything! I am so thankful to have her as my colleague and friend!” -Beth Anne Johnson
