Staples Center Set to Receive an Unexpected Christmas Gift

The Los Angeles Lakers were set to play the Brooklyn Nets in the Staples Center on Christmas day; however, the arena is getting an unexpected name change. The game will now be taking place in Cryto.com Arena. Well renowned NBA Insider, Shams Charania, broke the news on Twitter late last night.

As well known as Shams is in the NBA community, the Staples Center is renowned not only in sports, but in American pop culture, as one of the most prestigious venues. The Staples Center is currently home to the Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers, Sparks, and Kings. The Lakers have won six NBA championships in the building while the Sparks and Kings have added three WNBA and two NHL titles of their own. The Staples Center has also hosted 19 Grammy Awards ceremonies and memorials for the likes of Michael Jackson and Kobe Bryant as well as hosting countless other concerts and public events.

The name change is corresponding with AEG’s new partnership with Crypto.com. The arena has been known as Staples Center for all 22 years of its existence. In 2009, Staples bought the naming rights to the arena in perpetuity, but AEG reacquired the naming rights in 2019. While the official details of the agreement have not been released, multiple reports suggest Cryto.com gave AEG $700 million reasons why they should change the name. If these reports are accurate, this is the largest naming rights deal for a stadium in American sports to date beating out Sofi’s $600 million deal to name Los Angeles’ new football stadium. More details on the agreement can be found on AEG’s website.

This is not the first venture Crypto.com has made into the sports world as they have recently struck deals with Formula One, the UFC, Italy’s Serie A, Paris St-Germain, and the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens. They also purchased the uniform sponsor patch for the 76ers, Philadelphia’s NBA team.

When asked after his game last night, Paul George of the LA Clippers admitted that the name change would be weird.

Paul George isn’t alone. Many sports fans rushed to social media after the news broke. In less than 12 hours, the search term “Staples Center” has amassed nearly 107,000 mentions across social media platforms. Not so shockingly, 63.7% of these posts have scored a negative sentiment as fans express their shock and disdain for the name change.

Using Sprinklr’s sentiment analysis, we can take a look at some of the top words in these negative mentions. Along with a few expletives, we see words such as worst, bad, hate, and stupid as well as the acronyms smh and wtf. It’s pretty clear that fans aren’t vibing with the new name.

Eight Dead, Hundreds Injured At Travis Scott’s Astroworld Concert

Trigger warning. Videos and social media posts in this article include scenes of violence, drug use, and harsh language.  

Over 50,000 fans were packed in ready to see rapper Travis Scott perform at his Astroworld Festival in Houston on Friday. What began as a normal concert quickly turned into a tragic event. During the show, a crowd rush occurred resulting in the death of eight people and injuries to hundreds of others. The descriptions of the scene are daunting.

An account in the New York Times described the event. “Some collapsed. Others fought for air. Concertgoers lifted up the unconscious bodies of friends and strangers and surfed them over the top of the crowd, hoping to send them to safety. Others shouted out for help with CPR and pleaded for the concert to stop.”

A video has surfaced of a fan trying to get the attention of a camera operator. The fan is visibly distraught and calling for help. Instead of being met with the help he was looking for, other fans berated him as the concert goes on. The interaction can be seen below. (NSFW)

Another concerning video has surfaced as Travis Scott can be seen urging fans to put their middle fingers to the sky as emergency personnel entered the venue. (NSFW)

The concert continued for roughly half an hour after city officials said the “mass casualty event” had begun. Houston police chief, Troy Finner, said they were concerned that shutting down the venue would cause more riots, escalating the situation. Reports suggest that security and emergency personnel did not have adequate communication channels in place with the venue staff. As fans began to fill the arena, cell service became near non-existent.

Madeline Eskins, an intensive care unit nurse attending the concert, describes a scene where the event’s medical staff appeared unprepared and overwhelmed in a New York Times report. “She said she was taken to an area where three people were laid on the ground, all receiving CPR. Some of the medical workers did not appear to know how to check a pulse or properly conduct chest compressions, she said. “They looked terrified,” she said.”

Investigators are looking to determine the cause of death of all the victims. Along with the crowd surge, there is speculation that laced, counterfeit drugs may have accounted for some of the deaths. Officials state it may take weeks for the toxicology reports to shed more light on the situation. Videos have surfaced of one fan appearing to have a seizure.

At least 18 lawsuits have been filed since the event. Live Nation Entertainment, the event’s organizer, has been named as a defendant in all but one of the suits along with Travis Scott being named in most of the suits. Drake, who was a guest performer at the concert, has been named in at least one of the suits. Travis Scott and Drake have since posted on social media addressing the event.

Travis Scott and Drake were not the only ones to take to social media. Since the event, keywords “Travis Scott” and “Astroworld” have been mentioned almost 2.5 million times across social media channels. The vast majority of the posts, 89.7%, hold a negative sentiment. Posts consist of jarring scenes of the event, but most posts are calling out the rapper for how he handled the situation, how this is becoming a pattern at his shows, and calling him out for poorly thought out relief efforts for the victims.

Users are quick to judge Travis Scott on his poorly planned relief effort for victims of the show claiming the rapper is taking advantage of a tragedy by signing a partnership with Better Help.

Others are in shock how Travis could go out after the show unaware of what had just occurred.

Travis Scott has informed local authorities that he will be fully cooperative in their ongoing investigations regarding this tragic event, and that he is keeping the victims and their families in his thoughts and prayers.

Raiders Wide Receiver Charged With DUI After Fatal Car Crash

Henry Ruggs III has been charged with DUI causing death and reckless driving after causing a wreck on the Las Vegas strip. The incident occurred at approximately 3:39 Las Vegas time on Tuesday morning. Ruggs, who officers believe was impaired at the time of the accident, was driving at “high speeds” when he swerved and hit another vehicle. By the time help arrived at the scene, the victim’s car was on fire, and she along with her dog were announced dead at the scene. The deceased driver has not been identified at this time.

Ruggs was not alone in his car as passenger Kiara Je’nai Kilgo-Washington was taken to the hospital with serious injuries that do not appear life-threatening according to local police. Ruggs was taken to the hospital and was later transferred and booked at Clark County Detention Center.

Ruggs’ attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, have asked “everyone to reserve judgment until all the facts are gathered,” but it may be too late for that.

Since news of the crash broke Tuesday morning, there have already been over 131,000 mentions of Ruggs across social media. Of these mentions, 91.4% were scored with negative sentiment. People have not reserved their judgement, and they are not holding back on the former first round pick.

Many of the tweets call out Ruggs, or anyone for that matter, for driving drunk and how it is unacceptable in today’s times especially with access to rides from companies such as Uber or Lyft. Many of these tweets are NSFW as people take strong stands on the issue.

Other users are focused on the victim involved in this tragic incident.

In ESPN’s article regarding the incident, they reported that “Ruggs lost a childhood friend, Rod Scott, in a car accident in 2016, and Ruggs pays tribute to him by putting up three fingers — Scott wore No. 3 — to the sky after big plays.” Social media users are keying in on this and are baffled how someone so close to this issue would still get behind the wheel while intoxicated.

Ruggs is set to appear in court at noon eastern time today. Despite the fact that the case is still under investigation, the Las Vegas Raiders acted hastily in their decision to release Ruggs.

Furthermore, one twitter user has said his name has been removed from the locker room, and all of his merchandise has already been removed from the team store.

If found guilty, Ruggs faces 2-20 years in prison with no parole. Local personal injury attorney, Matt Hoffmann, believes Ruggs’ career is over. Along with time in prison, Hoffmann suggests Ruggs will lose his license and face civil suits that have the potential to bankrupt the former NFL receiver. Hoffmann added that everyone deserves due process, and that this case may take a very long time to settle.

Alec Baldwin Fatally Shoots “Rust” Crew Member

Last Friday, two members of the “Rust” film crew were shot. Alec Baldwin, an actor and producer of the film, shot what was believed to be a prop gun towards a camera killing director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, and injuring director Joel Souza.

Since the incident, the Santa Fe county sheriff’s office has opened an investigation and provided more details surrounding the shooting. Baldwin, who plays an outlaw in the film, was demonstrating how he would draw his weapon for a scene set to be shot. The gun which was supposed to be filled with blanks discharged and hit the crew members mentioned above. Hutchins was hit in the mid section while Souza was hit in the shoulder. Hutchins was airlifted to a hospital in Albuquerque where she was later pronounced dead. Souza was taken to a hospital in Santa Fe and has since been released.

The gun was reportedly checked for live rounds earlier in the day and was announced to be cold, meaning there were no live rounds in the chamber. Reportedly the gun was not re-checked after the crew broke for lunch. It is unclear at this time how the rounds ended up in the chamber. This same gun had allegedly been misfired already in the shooting of “Rust” causing crew members to walk off of the set citing unsafe working conditions.

Since the shooting, Baldwin has been a hot topic on social media. Over the past five days search terms “Baldwin AND shooting” and “Rust AND shooting” have amassed nearly 250,000 mentions across social media channels reaching over 6.3 billion users. The conversation peaked on Friday with 82.4 thousand mentions but has remained steady with at least  28.6 thousand mentions a day through Tuesday. Nearly all of the posts, 93.7 percent, held negative sentiment. Amongst the negative posts, #AlecForPrison garnered almost 1,000 mentions.

A main source of conversation is people blaming Alec and the rest of the crew for not taking appropriate safety measures.

The conversation has also taking a politically charged turn as Donald Trump Jr. reportedly produced a t-shirt mocking the incident. And other users are finding ways to compare this situation to that of Kyle Rittenhouse who shot and killed two people at a protest against police brutality in Wisconsin on August 25, 2020.

The deceased victim, Hutchins, has not been mentioned nearly as much as Baldwin. During the same time frame, Hutchins has only been mentioned 35,000 times by name. The hashtag #RIPHalynaHutchins trended briefly with almost 3,000 mentions. Most mentions were deemed to hold negative sentiment, which makes sense considering Hutchins lost her life, but many of the posts were showing condolences and support for Hutchins’ family.

Ben Simmons Returns Only to Provide More Drama for 76ers

If you follow the NBA, you have probably heard a lot about Ben Simmons over the past few months. After the Philadelphia 76ers lost in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, rumors swirled that the 76ers were shopping the All-Star point guard. Shortly after this, Simmons requested a trade.

Despite Simmons request, he remains on Philadelphia’s roster. The 76ers have reportedly been asking for a large trade package in return for Simmons and have not budged on their asking price. However, this may change soon as Simmons continues to be a distraction.

In an effort to force his way out of Philadelphia, Simmons held out of training camp which proved to be a costly decision. The team has fined Simmons $1.4 million for his absence in the preseason and undisclosed amounts of additional fines for missed practices, team meetings, and workouts. Simmons finally returned to the team on October 11th with no warning. Although Simmons has returned, he might as well not be there. Videos showing Simmons practicing with a phone in his pocket and disregarding the team huddle got the internet talking earlier on Monday.

Yesterday, the 76ers announced they suspended Simmons for the season opener for “conduct detrimental to the team.” Simmons reportedly refused to participate in several drills despite being asked directly by head coach Doc Rivers. Rivers then sent Simmons home, and the team suspended him shortly after. While Rivers remains confident that Simmons will eventually buy back into the team, Simmons’ teammates and fans aren’t so sure.

Over the past 24 hours, Simmons has garnered 254,119 mentions on social media. Of these, 82.4% are negative. Simply put, 76ers fans are fed up with Ben Simmons. The entire NBA community is discussing Simmons led by the state of Pennsylvania which has accounted for the most mentions of any state at 12,040. The conversation is being dominated by male social media users age 18-35.

If having the fans turn on Simmons wasn’t bad enough, Joel Embiid has too. Embiid is the cornerstone of the 76ers franchise and regarded by many to be one of the best players in the league. Embiid kept it real with reporters yesterday when asked about Simmons.

Does Jon Gruden’s Resignation Uncover a Larger Problem Facing the NFL?

Back in 2018, the Oakland Raiders, who have since relocated to Las Vegas, signed Jon Gruden to a 10-year contract worth $100 million to become the team’s new head coach. The Raiders signed Gruden in an attempt to reclaim a spot amongst the top teams in the NFL. However, signing Gruden has proven to be a mistake. Gruden resigned Monday night after leaked emails showed the head coach using racist, misogynistic, and homophobic language.

Emails released by the New York Times have put Gruden and the NFL under scrutiny once again. The original email detailed racist remarks directed towards DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFL Players Association. Gruden insulted Smith’s intelligence and made a racially charged comment towards Smith’s appearance. This email came to light on Friday, but was not enough for Gruden to step down or the Raiders to take action.

Gruden resigned after another wave of emails was released regarding his use of misogynistic and homophobic language that spanned from 2011 through 2018. Gruden’s comments included criticism of women being able to referee in the NFL, refusing to draft gay players, calling Rodger Goodell numerous homophobic slurs, and more.

Since the news of Gruden’s resignation broke, social media users have flooded their feeds with their opinions on Gruden and the state of the NFL. Since Monday night, the search term “Jon Gruden” has amassed 537,725 mentions and has reached 6.4 billion users. As you might imagine, 89.5% of the content regarding Gruden resulted in a negative sentiment score. Here are some of the top words dominating the conversation.

Over the past 24 hours, the conversation has shifted to a larger issue facing the NFL. The emails were discovered amidst the investigation into the Washington Football Team’s culture of sexual harassment of women. However, the Washington Post reports that no more of the emails will be released.

The emails Gruden exchanged were with Bruce Allen, former president of the Washington Football Team, but all of the focus is riding on Gruden. Some social media users are suggesting we take a look at the bigger issue facing the NFL as a whole. While Gruden’s remarks are awful and should not be condoned in any fashion, the NFL clearly has a larger problem surrounding their culture than the words of one team’s head coach.

Gruden may be the only one taking the blame as of now, and he deserves his fare share, but this story is not done unfolding quite yet. It will be interesting to see if any more of the NFL’s dirty laundry gets aired out in the weeks to follow.

Is Urban Meyer’s Time in Jacksonville Over?

Urban Meyer once again finds himself under the gun. If starting your career 0-4 as an NFL coach wasn’t reason enough to have fans breathing down your neck, Meyer added fuel to the fire this weekend. The backlash is in response to a video that surfaced of Meyer letting a woman, who was not his wife, dance on him in a Columbus bar.

This video has sparked conversation across social media. Since Monday morning, the keywords “Urban Meyer” have been mentioned approximately 165,000 times and reached 1.3 billion users. Not surprisingly, the conversation is being carried in large part by 18-35 year old males on social media. Another thing that should not come as a surprise is that 83.1% of the posts surrounding Meyer held negative sentiment.

The viral video seems to have ruined whatever relationship Meyer had left with his players. One player told Michael Silvers “He has zero credibility in that stadium. He had very little to begin with.” Silver posted a series of tweets that address how the locker room is viewing the situation.

One of the top trending hashtags surrounding Meyer was #PatMcAfeeShowLIVE . McAfee is a former NFL player who’s podcast has become one of the biggest hits amongst sports fans. McAfee addressed how he assumed players were treating the news in a NSFW segment on his podcast.

If you are unfamiliar with Meyer’s coaching history, you may think this is a harsh reaction for one lapse in judgement, but that’s just the thing. This is not the first time Meyers has been in the news for the wrong reasons. While still coaching at Ohio State University, Meyer was placed on leave and later suspended after reports surfaced that Meyer knew of Zach Smith’s abusive relationship towards his wife in 2018. Smith was an assistant coach on Meyer’s staff.

His time with the Jaguars started off rough when he hired Chris Doyle, who had been dismissed by Iowa after being accused of making racist remarks towards players. Meyer doubled down and defended his decision to the media. Things have not gotten much better since then. R Kelly Found Guilty of Racketeering and Sex Trafficking

Grammy winning singer/songwriter R. Kelly was convicted on charges including sexual exploitation of a child, bribery, racketeering and sex trafficking involving five victims on Tuesday, September 27th. Accusations against R. Kelly go back as far as 25 years. Over the last week, 50 witnesses took the stand to testify on the abuse R. Kelly inflicted on numerous victims.

During trial, the media was not allowed into the court room. Parts of the trial were so graphic, that the audio recording were not made public.

R. Kelly was convicted on all nine charges brought against him including a racketeering charge with 14 underlying acts. The jury found R. Kelly to be guilty in 12 of the 14 acts; he only needed to be found guilty of two to be convicted in court. The racketeering charge was for a violation of the Mann Act, a sex trafficking law.

R. Kelly is scheduled for sentencing on May 4, 2022 where he will face 10 years to life in prison. This does not mark the end of R. Kelly’s legal trouble. R. Kelly is set to face a second federal trial on charges of child pornography and obstruction of justice in Illinois related to a 2008 child pornography case in which he was acquitted. On top of this, R. Kelly faces criminal charges in Illinois, where he was indicted for aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving minors and in Minnesota, where Kelly was charged with engaging in prostitution with a minor.

Despite all of this, fans of the singer could be seen defending him outside of the courthouse.

However, these supporters are in the vast minority of how people feel about R. Kelly. Since the verdict was delivered, there have been 243,592 mentions of R. Kelly across social media reaching over 5.8 billion users. Of these, 88.2% of mentions were deemed to carry a negative sentiment. The most popular hashtag associated with R. Kelly’s court case was #MeToo.

R. Kelly’s case has been the highest profile #MeToo movement in the music industry to date.

This case has the potential to be a stepping stone in the right direction, away from victim shaming and towards believing victims of sexual assault. It also calls for the music industry to take a long look in the mirror. These allegations against R. Kelly were public for years, yet he was still signed by a major label and had artists agreeing to work with him. How can artists feel safe in an industry that supports people such as R. Kelly?

Did iOS 14.8 Steal the Spotlight from Apple’s Latest Event?

A little over a week since the apparent leak of iPhone 14, Apple debuted the iPhone 13, Apple Watch Series 7 and more at their California Streaming event. In case you missed it, here’s everything you need to catch up on in less than 10 minutes.

The iPhone 13 was the big ticket item from the event, and it’s arrival sent social media into a frenzy. Since the event kicked off at 1 PM EDT yesterday to 12 PM today, iPhone 13 has generated 604,455 mentions across platforms. Twitter users dominated the conversation with 554,737 of the mentions. Using Sprinklr to run a sentiment analysis, we found that 59.7% of the conversation held positive sentiment. Similarly to past generations of the iPhone, emphasis was put on the camera and it’s updated capabilities. As you can see in the word cloud below, users were also drawn to the new colors, the size, display, and storage capacity of the new iPhone.

The iPhone 13 was not the only thing Apple announced yesterday however. With the new Apple Event also came iOS 14.8. This update came as a surprise to many as iOS 15 is scheduled to be release later this year. The reasoning behind the surprise update is concerning to say the least. iOS 14.8 is a security patch in response to researchers at Citizen Lab finding a spyware called Pegasus on an iPhone.

Pegasus was developed by Israel’s NSO group and is considered the Holy Grail of surveillance. The spyware allows users to use a zero-click information method to collect whatever they seek off of any device. In the past, people were typically prompted by spyware through links in either texts or emails, but Pegasus allows whoever is using the spyware to access a device’s camera, microphone, messages, emails, and calls without tipping off the owner. John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, warns that “This spyware can do everything an iPhone user can do on their device and more.”

Over the past 24 hours there have been over 10,500 mentions of the search terms “iOS AND update” on Twitter. Given the severity of this security breach, the researchers from Citizen Lab and Apple users are urging others to update to iOS 14.8 as quickly as possible.

As one could imagine, this update did not bring as much joy to Apple users as the iPhone 13 announcement did. Ninety percent of posts contained negative sentiment from users.

This is convenient timing for Apple. The California Streaming event and release of the iPhone 13 will carry the bulk of the load of conversation involving Apple, but iOS 14.8 is a critical patch to a security risk that should not go unnoticed.

Did the iPhone 14 just get leaked?

Just yesterday, Apple announced “California Streaming” would take place on September 14th at 10 AM PDT. Many Apple users believe that the tech giant is going to reveal their design for the iPhone 13, the Apple Watch Series 7, and potentially AirPods 3.

With this major announcement coming from Apple, one would think social media would be jumping at the bit to talk about the new iPhone 13. Instead people are buzzing about the iPhone 14. The iPhone 14? Yes that’s right.  Notorious tech leaker Jon Prosser from Front Page Tech just claimed he has a look at the iPhone 14 over a year before its release and even before the iPhone 13 has been released.

In this video Prosser claims that the iPhone is following Android’s lead by making the back of the phone completely flat. They are accomplishing this by placing the camera in a cutout instead of having it jut out like it has been in recent models. Another big change is that the iPhone 14 will allegedly be surrounded by a titanium chassis. Prosser even claims to have real images of the iPhone 14 which can be seen in the video above. If this information from Prosser is true, he may have just spoiled not one, but two Apple product launches.

Twitter users are already debating if the iPhone 13 is worth buying or if one should simply wait a year until the iPhone 14 drops.

Main topics surrounding the iPhone 14 leak include the iPhone 12, the iPhone 13, the upcoming Apple Event, and John Prosser who is the cause of the leak.

Users are worried about their old iPhones not working. This may be a justified concern considering Apple settled a lawsuit some refer to as Battery Gate in 2020.
