The News in New Media

The Academy Award for ‘Wildest Academy Awards Ceremony’ Goes To…

If you’ve consumed any bit of news this week, you’ve probably heard about what many people are dubbing the craziest Academy Awards (A.K.A. the Oscars) ceremony ever. Though the stars shone bright in haute couture and the hosts made cringeworthy jokes – par for the course for all awards shows – this night was highlighted by Will Smith hopping on stage to slap presenter Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her shaved head, after her publicly discussed struggle with alopecia.

Rock carried on presenting as Smith headed back to his seat, and the crowd had reactions ranging from shock and awe to horror. (Sadly, Nicole Kidman’s iconic reaction was actually not to the slap itself but rather to seeing Jessica Chastain, which is also understandable.)

But viewers (and non-viewers who were glued to their social timelines) reacted to the slap heard ’round the world with what can only be described as glee:

https://twitter.com/AlishaGrauso/status/1508281022290403329?s=20&t=zWE5ngOY1N6ZrS9oky4tfg

Many supported Smith’s actions, noting that he was acting in defense of his wife’s ongoing struggle with the autoimmune disease as well in response to what’s known as misogynoir, which refers to misogyny specifically directed toward Black women. Conversely, others agreed that he was in the right to defend his wife but should have acted in another way rather than physical violence.

After the fact, Smith himself conceded that he could have acted differently, calling his actions “unacceptable and inexcusable” in the following Instagram statement:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CbqmaY1p7Pz/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

In the statement, Smith said that he was prepared for jokes at his own expense but a joke about his wife’s autoimmune disease “was too much for [him] to bear and [he] reacted emotionally.” He not only apologized to Rock but also to the Academy and the Williams family, whose patriarch, Richard, he played in the biopic King Richard and the role for which he won an Oscar later that night.

From Saturday morning through noon Eastern time today, the words Oscars or Academy Awards were mentioned more than 692.6K times online, reaching more than 8.58 billion feeds. Many of the trends focused on the actual event and all its trappings, such as Oscars 2022 or Red Carpet, but Rock’s name was also one of the highest-ranking trends, both on its own and in conjunction with the Smiths. The movie CODA, which won the “Best Picture” award, has cleaned up across award shows this season, and lots of traffic (just under 501.4K mentions!) surrounded the movie’s inclusive casting and great acting. Denis Villanueva’s Dune won the most awards of the night with six, and raked in over 398K mentions.

Though the winners were duly recognized and celebrated, the lasting legacy of the 94th annual Academy Awards is the slap itself. The Academy is reviewing Smith’s actions and is considering rescinding the award, stating they do not condone violent behavior at all. This statement was expected, but many fans found it hypocritical after noted abusers and criminals have won many Oscars without repercussions or similar investigations:

https://twitter.com/FlLMDORK/status/1508312075868819462?s=20&t=zWE5ngOY1N6ZrS9oky4tfg

We can only wait and see what decision the Academy will reach, and how the Internet will react when the result comes down.

NFTs coming to Instagram

This week at the South by Southwest Conference & Festivals, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Instagram will soon include NFTs on the platform. Zuckerberg didn’t give an exact timeline on this, but stated that they should be available within the year.

Since the news broke on Tuesday, search terms “Instagram” and “NFT” have generated 29.15K mentions and reached 306.16 million users. Twitter dominates this conversation topic with over 18,755 mentions. Location-wise, users from the United States primarily contributed to the majority of this with 4.1K mentions.

What is an NFT?

If you’re confused about what NFTs are, you’re not alone. A 2021 Security.Org survey found that 66% of Americans do not know what NFTs are. NFT is the commonly used acronym for virtual non-fungible tokens that are stored on the Ethereum blockchain. These tokens have a unique “signature” from their owner, making them non-transferable.

The easiest way to think of NFTs is that while everyone can view an image online, NFTs allow for there to be a sole owner of the image. In other words, they can be considered as a way to make digital objects like collector’s items. For example, Nyan Cat, a popular 2011 gif of a cat with a poptart body, sold its NFT for $600,000 in February 2021.

The metadata on the token even allows for additional information to be stored. This is valuable if you have a digital art piece and want to add the artist’s signature to it. Royalties can also be programmed into the NFT, so the owner can receive a percentage of sales when the NFT object is sold to new people.

How would it be used on Instagram?

The short answer is: no one knows yet. Zuckerberg is traditionally vague about his plans for Meta, however there is speculation on what it can be used for. If you were scrolling through Twitter earlier this year, you may have been surprised to see hexagonal profile pictures. This was due to Twitter rolling out their own abilities for users to use NFTs on their platform by linking them on their profile. So, it’s no surprise that Zuckerberg wouldn’t want to fall behind on the social media FinTech advancement features.

Influencers and celebrities on Instagram may be able to have the ability to similarly mint their own posts to generate more revenue. It may also end up being used as a way to market more content. Much remains to be seen if every Instagram user will have access to create an NFT at all.

Currently, users are undecided on how this will go. It remains to be seen in what, if any change, this will bring to the social media platform.

Elon Musk Challenges Vladimir Putin to Fight

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man (worth 219.1 billion) is no stranger to letting his thoughts out on Twitter. The founder of both Tesla and Space X took to Twitter Monday challenging Russian President Vladimir Putin to “single combat” over Ukraine.

Musk wrote Putin’s name written in Russian and noted “Stakes are Ukraine” where Ukraine is spelled out in Ukrainian lettering.

On March 5th Musk posted a video to his twitter page with the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. Following Russia’s invasion on February 24, Musk provided Ukraine with access to SpaceX’s satellite-internet system Starlink – a system of some 2,000 satellites which provide web access to underserved areas of the world. President Zelensky thanked Musk, tweeting: “I’m grateful to him for supporting Ukraine with words and deeds.”

Musk reiterated in a later tweet that he is “absolutely serious” about the offer. When asked if he would be surprised if Putin accepted the challenge, Musk insisted it “would be an honor.”

“If Putin could so easily humiliate the west, then he would accept the challenge,” Musk wrote in another response on Twitter. “But he will not.”

Ukraine’s vice prime minister and head of digital transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, also weighed in on Elon’s challenge: “I am sure that @elonmusk can send Putin to Jupiter.”

Since Musk tweeted his challenge to Putin, he has been mentioned on Twitter over 123K times. Twitter remains the highest site of discourse surrounding the Musk Vs Putin fight tracking 98.4K mentions in the last 24 hours.

While overall sentiment scores regarding Musk’s tweet remain largely neutral (78K of mentions have been neutral) some Twitter users have has a comical response to the tweet while others have deemed his remarks as insensitive to those who are on the ground in Ukraine fighting.

Some users have also pointed to the likelihood that Musk’s account could be suspended for his reckless tweeting.

Conversations on Twitter that center around Elon Musk have also led to an increased number of mentions surrounding his business ventures. Tesla, Dogecoin, Bitcoin, and SpaceX have all been accounted for as some of the top terms of discussion within this thread.

Since Elon represents wealth and power within the United States, increased mentions of Jeff Bezos, the second richest man in the world, have also been initiated alongside this conversation. Discussion of inflation in relation to the ongoing war has also surfaced as result of Musk’s Twitter activity.

As the conversation unfolds, the Social Media Listening Center will keep you updated on the latest trending topics as they relate to Musk’s threat and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Scientists Discover Shackleton’s Lost Ship Endurance

In 1915, in the thick of the polar exploration craze, famed explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship, Endurance, was crushed in pack ice and lost in the Weddell Sea, off the Antarctic coast. Thanks to Shackleton’s strong leadership and resourcefulness, the entire crew escaped the ordeal safely after being trapped in the ice for ten straight months. The pack ice shifted and swallowed the ship on November 24, 1915; the crew and their surviving sled dogs camped out on the ice for nearly two months before making a desperate trip in lifeboats to nearby (well, approximately 346 nautical miles away) Elephant Island.

From here, Shackleton prepared to make difficult decisions and ultimately settled on a do-or-die strategy: he and five selected crewmen would embark in an open lifeboat to South Georgia Island, the expedition’s original launch point more than a year previously. This trip was 720 nautical miles one-way, and Shackleton refused to pack any unnecessary supplies, knowing they’d be more valuable to the castaways past a certain point of no return. Miraculously, Shackleton and his crew reached South Georgia Island in just sixteen days and hiked 32 more difficult, mountainous miles overland to the closest whaling stations.

Shackleton reached the whaling station on May 20, 1916; by August 30, all the castaways on Elephant Island had been rescued alive and taken back to safety in Chile.

The Endurance's Last Voyage

Flash-forward to March 2022, more than a century after Shackleton and his men first became trapped in the ice. This week, archaeologists on the Endurance22 expedition announced that they had finally discovered the wreck of the Endurance, more than 3 kilometers deep in the Weddell Sea. Serendipitously, the wreck was located on the 100th anniversary of Shackleton’s funeral – March 5.

This groundbreaking discovery was a triumph of maritime archaeology, with the ship remaining in beautiful condition. The frigid Antarctic waters prevented much decay or deterioration, with the name still evident on the ship’s stern.

The expedition has lived in memory due to the allure of the polar regions and Shackleton’s heroism in saving his whole crew, and continued to be scientists’ white whale due to the incredibly difficult conditions of trawling the Weddell Sea. Though the wreck is considered a designated monument under the International Arctic Treaty and so no artifacts may be removed, the knowledge of its location and photographic evidence of the wreck still combine to be a phenomenal discovery.

Naturally, such exciting news dominated both traditional and digital media. The news first broke to a wider audience on March 9, just a few days after the discovery, and traffic surrounding the search terms “Endurance AND Shackleton” naturally skyrocketed, with more than 83.4K mentions on the 9th alone. Of a week-long window from March 7 through today, these terms were mentioned more than 104.4K times.

Top trends occur not only in English but also in Spanish, due to the proximity to South America, and French, emblematic of the international agreements surrounding Antarctica. The United Kingdom also provided a significant amount of traffic volume, with the BBC breaking the news in a comprehensive article as well as holding claim to Shackleton as a native son and prized explorer.

Many of these themes express awe and recognition of this amazing accomplishment, as well as frequent mentions of other Endurance crew members such as captain Frank Worsley, who played integral roles in the 1915 ordeal. According to Smithsonian Magazine, the wreck fell only four miles away from where Worsley had initially predicted it lay.

Experts from other industries also chimed in on the social landscape, including a fascinating thread in which various marine biologists sought to identify the polar marine animals seen in the photos:

https://twitter.com/griffiths_huw/status/1501517171050037250?s=20&t=EQgUV3799hPuXTVUPVtSFg

While social traffic has dropped off again following the initial newsbreak on March 9, there’s no doubt this major discovery has altered both modern maritime archaeology as well as our historical knowledge of the event.

Spotify and Discord Outage Affects Thousands Worldwide

This past Tuesday Spotify and Discord users were met with surprise after being logged out of their accounts. When they tried to log back in, they were met with the error message that something was wrong with their username or password. As when most internet outages occur, users took to other forms of social media to discuss.

Spotify is a Swedish music streaming platform and one of the largest in the world. It is estimated that more than 175,000 users experienced issues with their Spotify account. Discord is a VoIP communication system platform where users can communicate with each other through various digital means. It is estimated that more than 61,000 users experienced issues on Discord.

After occurring on March 8, search terms “Spotify” and “down” generated 258.21K mentions and reached 690.53 million users. Sprinklr data shows the 125,597 of the mentions spiked at 1pm when the outage initially occurred. Search terms “Discord” and “down” generated 151.96K mentions and reached 346.85 million users.

No definite cause of the outage has been identified, however Discord did mention that their issue could be linked to using Google Cloud services. Google Cloud is a cloud computing service that hosts services for compute, storage and application development on Google’s hardware system. Spotify did not comment on the reason behind their outage, but it is assumed that they experienced the same issue.

While Spotify and Discord worked to get their system back online, users enjoyed lamenting about the outage on Twitter:

While this will certainly not be the last technology outage users will experience, you can always count on the affected users to bond over these issues.

What is WarTok?

TikTok feeds have transformed into a new experience for many users in light of the War between Russia and Ukraine. Users have recently complained about scrolling through mundane content including funny animals, useful lifehacks, or DIY projects and without trigger warning then being shown live action from the devastation in Ukraine. A Twitter user explains the strange phenomenon in a Tweet, “Twitter feels especially dystopian on nights like this. Tweets about war mixed in with sports, memes, etc like it’s all of the same importance. Don’t think we were meant to absorb info like this.”

Users have deemed the transformed platform “War Tok”. Vox reporter Rebecca Jennings explains this was never what TikTok intended to become. When the popular app was created in 2018 it promoted itself as a carefree place to share content with the goal of allowing users to enjoy comical, lighthearted content. Contrary to the creator’s vision for the platform Jennings notes, “Over the past three years, TikTok has become the site of political commentary, political activism, political propaganda, and in moments of war, a complicated, confusing, and sometimes crucial record of civilians on the ground.”

Other complaints have surfaced about scammers benefiting from the war by way of fake relief funds which are being promoted on the platform. War Tok is also under fire for the spread of misinformation and fake news. Mainly out-of-context audio clips and video have been circulating within the app gaining millions of views despite TikTok’s community guidelines that does not permit misinformation that causes harm to individuals or the larger public regardless of intent. One video posted on the platform showed Russian soldiers parachuting into Ukraine but was actually several years old. Another clip claimed to show Russian and Ukrainian troops “face to face,” but it dated back to 2014. And an ultra-viral video, which supposedly depicted Ukrainian soldiers saying goodbye to sobbing loved ones, was cut from a 2017 documentary film.

According to Sprinklr, War Tok has been mentioned over 10K times across platforms and has reached a total of 34.08 Million feeds since Russia declared the invasion of Ukraine on February 24th. Trending hashtags surrounding the War Tok content include #ukraine, #war, #tiktok, #putin, and #russian. The overall sentiment within this conversation is overwhelmingly negative. 91.4% of mentions include negative sentiment reflective of the short comings of the platform since the war began.

While this is not the first time a major social media platform has been receiving backlash for the spread and promotion of misinformation, in the context of war, users are not hesitating to share their discontent and have threatened to boycott the app.

Although fake news has been swirling around TikTok, the situation in Ukraine is very much real. An estimated 1.5 million people have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries and European Union officials predicted that upwards of 7 million could eventually be displaced. If you would like to donate to an organization on the ground that is ensuring the safety and health of fleeing refugees, please visit one of the following links:

Looking Back At The 2022 NFL Scouting Combine

The 2022 NFL Scouting Combine took place in Indianapolis over the last few days, as the best and brightest college football stars showed off their skills to potential future teams. As the 2022 Draft approaches, the next month and a half for these players will be quite a busy time.

Of course, last year, Clemson’s own Trevor Lawrence was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars as the first-overall pick, and the Jaguars yet again hold the number-one spot, followed by the Lions, Texans, Jets, and Giants to round out the top five.

Live results as well as several mock drafts have been popping up across the Internet as events concluded and coverage wrapped up. From the start of the month through midnight on March 6, the final day of the Combine, there were 129.65K mentions across social media of the term “NFL Combine” alone, with a reach of more than 2.05 billion. Traffic surged on the first day of the event, March 3, peaking with more than 32.8K mentions. While Twitter led the way in mentions as usual, traditional news outlets as well as Reddit also offered more mentions than they normally do in comparison to such platforms.

Most mentions were neutral in sentiment, with an overwhelming 108.1K neutral mentions. Most of these are simply reports of news and results without any opinion filtered into them.

State by state, many of the locations with high traffic and levels of discussion were those that offered many schools and players up for the Combine. Texas, California, Florida, Ohio, and Georgia were the top five highest-volume states. While these all offer top-tier prospects and lots of the discussion online focuses around their favorite school’s players, Florida is a unique example. Not only are collegiate fans looking at their players, but Jaguars fans are also weighing in on the wide open field ahead of them for whoever their team might select.

This year, Clemson put four players on show: CBs Andrew Booth, Jr., and Mario Goodrich; WR Justyn Ross; and LB Baylon Spector.

Elon Musk provides Starlink Internet to Ukraine

It is no secret that the current war between Ukraine and Russia has the world on edge right now. Many are fearing the beginning of a World War III as Russia’s military continues to invade parts of Ukraine. With this, many are also watching on what will be done to help Ukraine attempt to fight back against Russia.

World renowned billionaire Elon Musk has attempted to aid Ukraine by providing Starlink Internet satellites. These terminals will provide internet access despite the attacks from Russia. Musk sent these terminals following a plea on Twitter from Ukraine’s vice prime minister Mykhailo Fedorov:

News of Musk’s internet terminals and exchange with Fedorov sparked multiple conversations across digital media. A Sprinklr search from February 26 to March 3 with search terms “Elon Musk,” “Starlink,” and “Ukraine” has generated 134.11K mentions and reached 1.32 billion users. Twitter dominates this conversation with 94,812 mentions.

Since sending the Starlink satellites a day after Fedorov’s plea, Musk has responded to questions from Fedorov on how to keep the satellites running via Twitter. However, Musk tweeted out on Thursday, March 3 that Ukrainians should use Starlink with extreme caution. He hinted that Russians may attempt to hack it and use it as a targeting mechanism. When a Ukrainian user asked him to elaborate on how they could use it with caution, he responded that Starlink should be used “only when needed” and the antenna should be placed “as far away from people as possible.”

Russian Director-General of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, openly criticized Musk’s move on Twitter:

To which Musk sarcastically responded:

It remains to be seen if Elon’s concerns of Russian attacks will come into fruition. Until then though, Ukrainians will at least have internet access as havoc continues to surround them.

State of the Union Recap

As war rages on in Europe, President Biden sought to unify a divided, fearful country in the annual State of the Union Address last night. While upwards of 37 Million viewers turned on their TV to watch, social media response to the president’s address was nothing short of substantial. A total of 34.94K mentions were noted across platforms from the night before the event through today. An impressive 396.85 Million feeds were reached with news regarding The Address. A shocking discrepancy in net sentiment scores reveals most participants within the social media conversation were displeased with the president’s remarks. Only 6.14% of mentions were positive while 93.86% had a negative tone.

President Biden’s first formal State of the Union address largely focused on Ukraine, inflation, the Covid-19 pandemic and a four-point “Unity Agenda.” According to Domenico Montanaro, Senior Political Editor/Correspondent for NPR, “Biden urged world unity in standing up to Russia, listed ways he’s trying to address rising prices (even if they will likely have limited to no effect in the short term) and offered an optimistic outlook about the end of the pandemic. Biden made mention of some progressive policy items, such as the need for robust voting-rights legislation and stood up for transgender and abortion rights (while leaving out some other topics such as climate change).”

Kevin Liptak, political correspondent for CNN noted that Republican audiences were seemingly unimpressed with Biden’s ability to counteract inflation. Although inflation is difficult to combat for any president, “The stark divisions currently fracturing the country were just as plain Tuesday as they have been since Biden took office. His economic proposals gained almost no applause from Republicans in the audience.” Liptak notes, “In the eight months until November’s critical midterm elections, Biden isn’t likely to have a larger audience than he had Tuesday night; his message will have to resonate if he hopes to speak next year to a Congress still controlled by Democrats.”

Twitter surpassed traditional news outlets for leading the conversation surrounding the State of the Union Address with over 15.6K mentions while news sources gathered around 13.2K. Trending hashtags included #secureourborder, #foxnews, #sotu (State of the Union), and #Ukriane. These trends corelate to the larger trends in the conversation surrounding Ukraine and the large republican response to the president’s latest address.

Leaders in the conversation surrounding the State of the Union Address included CNN, Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and The Associated Press. While the President set the tone for the political agenda in the coming months, we are sure to receive additional responses from numerous state government officials in the coming weeks. As always, the Social Media Listening Center will keep you up to date with all of the latest trending topics.

Recapping The 2022 SAG Awards

This past Sunday, February 27, the 28th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (or SAG Awards) were presented. Notably, these awards focus solely on acting and performers, rather than the broad range of cinematic categories that are often found in other award shows, such as editing, sound, costume design, casting, and so on. As the SAG Awards website states, the focus on individual and ensemble performances emphasizes “what all actors know – that acting is a collaborative art.”

With just 13 categories of awards, the show moved quickly, but there was no shortage of marquee names or high fashion. Even with major global events going on, there was no shortage of social media discussion as well. On February 27th alone, the official #SAGAwards hashtag was mentioned 313,616 times with a reach of more than 6.43 billion! A stunning 95.3% of these mentions were positive, with top trends including “Squid Game,” “House of Gucci,” and Selena Gomez.

Let’s look at a few of the big winners:

CODA: Won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture; Troy Kotsur won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

CODA, which stands for “child of deaf adults,” follows the eponymous child as she struggles with familial identity and responsibility while navigating high school and a desire to express herself through music. This film was notable for casting deaf actors in deaf roles, rather than hearing actors, following Marlee Matlin’s lead. Kotsur is also the first deaf male actor to ever be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, showing how powerful CODA is.

CODA was mentioned 22.48K times on Sunday, and many of the most frequently used emojis are hand symbols, representing the import of sign language. The most-used emoji overall was the ASL sign for “I love you.”

Squid Game: Nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series; Lee Jung-jae won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series; Jung Ho-yeon won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series; won Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series

“Squid Game” was the hot topic last fall as fans flocked to Netflix’s Korean drama about life-or-death versions of childhood games. In the show, 456 players who are in dire financial straits risk it all to win a massive monetary prize. It currently holds the title of Netflix’s most-watched series ever, and it cleaned up with three wins out of four nominations at the SAG Awards and 52.25K mentions on Sunday. Fans are clearly dedicated, as a widely shared Tweet sought to take down HBO’s “Euphoria”‘s monopoly over Sunday-night television:

Ted Lasso: Won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series; Jason Sudeikis won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, which Brett Goldstein was also nominated for; Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham were both nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series

“Ted Lasso” is the hit comedy series of the year, a heartwarming but introspective show about an American football coach recruited to become the head coach of a professional soccer team in London. Sudeikis’ Lasso is full of quips and optimism, but also as the series goes on we see his struggles with his divorce and mental health. Even the characters viewers dislike are nuanced and layered, and we get to see great narrative arcs for everyone. With the show set to wrap up after a third season, this comedy is a hit start to finish.

The show title was mentioned 11.86K times while Sudeikis’ name was mentioned nearly 6K times. Nearly 94% of the mentions were positive, exemplifying the widespread love people feel for the Apple TV show.

Other category winners include:

  • Michael Keaton in “Dopesick” – Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
  • Kate Winslet in “Mare of Easttown” – Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
  • Jean Smart in “Hacks” – Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
  • “Succession” – Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
  • Will Smith in “King Richard” – Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
  • Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” – Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
  • Ariana DeBose in “West Side Story” – Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
  • “No Time to Die” – Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
