South Carolina 4-H Horse Program

The South Carolina Horse Program has kicked off a new online series called Talking Horses Tuesday. Starting this past September, the program occurs monthly through the end of January. Senior 4-H members, youth ages 14-18, can participate in an online panel discussion. Panelists are professionals in the horse industry and were selected due to their knowledge of a specific topic. The topics are current issues in the horse industry that youth may be interested in but that no one wants to talk about it.

During September’s panel discussion, the horse project was able to collect some phenomenal professionals. The topic was the Horse Industry and COVID-19. Owner, manager, and primary trainer of Potts Performance Horses, Mr. T. R. Potts, presented the point of view on how COVID-19  has affected horse owners, farms, and trainers. Joining him as a panelist was Mrs. Molly Oakman, Director of Equestrian Operations at Tryon International Equestrian Center. Molly gave participants an amazing insight into how horse facilities are overcoming COVID-19. Finally, we had Mrs. Caroline Jennings with the United States Equestrian Federation, who provided us with an insight into how the Federation was supporting equine events to make sure they are staying safe. During the discussion, youth were invited to ask the panelists questions.

South Carolina 4-H is looking forward to their next discussion topic, Horse Cloning. Any youth interested in joining this discussion or the series can sign up for free with the button below.
