Forest Fest, originally launched in 2016, returns with a host of activities for both adults and children. This free event includes guided hikes, nature walks, scavenger hunts, wildlife encounters, waterfall views, canoeing, kayaking, forestry activities, and environmental education. The event, initially co-coordinated by James Wilkins, Education and Resource Coordinator for the South Carolina Botanical Garden, Russell Hardee, Experimental Forest Manager, and Betty Baldwin from PRTM, was designed for anyone wanting to connect with nature and learn about the Clemson Experimental Forest (CEF).
After being in limbo since 2019 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and staffing changes, Forest Fest has been revived through the collaborative efforts of Patricia Whitener from Clemson Cooperative Extension, the Clemson Experimental Forest, CAFLS, and CBSHS.
Forest Fest 2024 saw participation from 12 community organizations, 17 student groups, and 15 research groups, along with natural resource agencies like the SC Department of Natural Resources and SC Forestry Commission. Extension program teams, including Clemson Rural Health, School & Community Gardening, 4-H Youth Development, and Clemson Invasive Species, were also represented. The event engaged over 250 families with hands-on activities throughout the CEF, celebrating a successful return to its roots.
