The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), offered by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service, is dedicated to providing hands-on nutrition education to children, youth, adults, and families with limited financial resources. EFNEP focuses on four core areas: diet quality and physical activity, food resource management, food safety, and food security.
In 2024, EFNEP is teaming up with the South Carolina Nutrition Action Coalition (SNAC) to launch the “5210” campaign, a statewide initiative aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles. The 5210 campaign provides simple, actionable guidelines:
- 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
- 2 hours or less of recreational screen time daily.
- 1 hour of active play every day.
- 0 sugar-sweetened beverages.
This campaign seeks to enhance the health of families, children, and youth by encouraging nutritious eating, reducing screen time, increasing physical activity, and avoiding sugary drinks.
Starting in August 2024, the 5210 campaign will complement EFNEP’s efforts by implementing a variety of activities throughout the school year across all EFNEP counties in South Carolina. Through direct education and engaging initiatives, EFNEP and SNAC aim to inspire and sustain healthy habits in communities statewide.
Stay tuned for more updates on how the 5210 campaign will be making a difference in your community!
