Distinguished Lectures in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023

July 13, 2023

The School of CEEES hosted a Distinguished Lecture Series with four seminars during the Fall and Spring 2023 terms. The Distinguished Lectures bring talented and successful academics and industry leaders to Clemson to collaborate with faculty and students, sharing their knowledge, best practices, and ideas. During the past year, Distinguished Lectures were given by a mass timber expert from Thornton Tomasetti and department chairs from Georgia Tech, NC State University and The Ohio State University.

The first Distinguished Lecture was given by Dr. Donald Webster from the Georgia Institute of Technology in September 2022. His informative seminar was titled, “Structure and Mixing of a Turbulent Meandering Chemical Plume.” In October 2022, the second speaker in the Distinguished Lecture series was Dr. Morton Barlaz from North Carolina State University who gave a seminar titled Understanding and Predicting Temperatures in Municipal Solid Waste Landfills.”

During March 2023, Dr. Allison MacKay from The Ohio State University discussed her research titled: “When in Ohio … Linking Water Quality Parameters to Algal Toxin Fate during Drinking Water Treatment.”  The final speaker in the series was a mass-timber expert, Jordan Komp from Thornton Tomasetti.  Mr. Komp discussed the design, permitting, and construction of the Ascent Tower, currently the tallest mass-timber building in the world.  The April Distinguished Lecture with Jordan Komp was sponsored by the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering and the Nieri Department of Construction, Development and Planning.

The Distinguished Lecture Series planned for Fall 2023 includes Dr. Jamie Padgett from Rice University and Dr. Ram Pendyala from Arizona State University!  We are looking forward to their visits to Clemson University!
