Intern Insights: POWER Trip

POWER Group in Chicago at the famous bean!

Hi Everyone, my name is Dani and as a student-athlete (women’s tennis) at Clemson, I’ve had the unique opportunity to work with Student Athlete Development to build my network and leadership connections beyond the tennis arena. I’m thrilled to share my recent involvement with POWER Leadership Academy.

This past June Clemson athletics, together with IPTAY, took a group of women student athletes and staff to a POWER Chicago trip. POWER is a group of women athletes and staff at Clemson who work on ensure the female student athlete’s college experience is enhanced through ensuring women collegiate athletes at Clemson are provided the same resources and opportunities as the male sports. We spent three days in Chicago and while difficulty parcel down into one post, I will walk you through our trip and the greatest takeaways that I think will benefit all students as we work to become young scholars and professionals.

DAY 1: Style

As soon as we hopped off the plane, we swung by Nordstrom to shop for business professional attire. We all had our own stylists who helped us find the right outfits for us. The biggest take away from there was that one should never be afraid to be yourself, even when you are dressing for professional events. Everyone has their own style and way of expression and that we can channel that expression for multiple settings. For example, I felt more comfortable and worked with my stylist to find brightly colored and fitted clothing while my friend appreciates more muted colors that are bit more breezy. No style is better than another, it just means we all bring something different to the table and can look professional in our own ways.

DAY2: Drop the Doubts

As our first activity, we met with two women who work at IMPROV company. We did various games and talks in order to get comfortable with each other and the work we would be doing.  What I didn’t realize until the end of the session is that I was learning so much about myself, too, because some of our activities really enabled us to open up with one another. The biggest lesson learned there was to never be afraid to be yourself, to show your personality or your emotions/worries. Being a woman, I sometimes believe we think we need to close-up and be the calm one in the room and control our emotions at our best, however, if expressed in the right way, you will see how many people share the same thoughts as you.

We also had a networking session with a variety of successful women who were top in their fields like marketing, management, law, and so much more. To be honest,  I was worried before talking to them; I did not think there was going to be a flawless conversation or that they would even be interested in talking to me. However, once they walked in and I started conversation with a couple of these wonderful women, my nerves went away, the conversations were quality, and they wanted to know about me. During our conversations they  saw and pointed out so many great skills and characteristics that I knew I had but I didn’t think they were a big deal.  I have learned to not be so critical towards myself and take pride in all the assets that I have and not to doubt myself. I walked in there with so many insecurities, which turned out to be my best qualities, so never doubt yourself!

DAY3:

We visited Gatorade headquarters and our tour guide showed around the offices, explaining that it was emptier than normal because COVID protocols only dictated that employees be in-office for meetings. However, we were able to ask those in attendance many question about the work environment, the skills relevant for the job and the pathways they took to arrive where they are today.  What I realized that so many of these women didn’t even know that they wanted to be in marketing or in whatever they’re doing now. The whole point is that it does not matter where you are now or that you are undecided with what you want to do, it is all about trying and seeing what you like, what you’re best at and exploring until you find what you truly want to keep doing for a long time or as a career. They did not say that college degree did not matter, not at all, however they did say you can work almost everywhere with any college degree if you are someone who is hard working and wants to learn.

Although I am an undergraduate student, I think the greatest lesson learned is to never be scared to network and we all have valuable qualities and skills–we just have to believe in ourselves–and that can make all the difference.

Intern Insights: Sophia Talks Hangout Fest

My Experience at Hangout Music Festival 🙂

Picture this; it’s a random day in April. I’m sitting on a bench in front of Daniel Hall (because where else would I be) when I receive a call from my cousin with an offer that I couldn’t refuse.

“Would you come with me to Hangout Music Festival if my mom buys you a ticket?”

While in utter confusion because I’ve never heard of Hangout Music Festival, I tell her that I’ll call her back. My first move is to look it up. I see the names “Post Malone” and “Doja Cat” and I immediately call her back and say yes without hesitation. Believe it or not, I have never been to a concert other than Bruce Springstein with my mom (ugh) so this was really exciting for me! My aunt wanted me to come because my cousin is 17 years old, and she needed someone to watch over her.

My cousin’s cat, Snooki 🙂

Fast forward to May 19, 2022– it’s time to go! Hangout Fest is in Gulf Shores, Alabama. My cousin lives a few hours away from there, in Fort Payne. On the

Thursday of May 19, I flew to her house, where I was warmly welcomed by her adorable cats.

The next morning, we drove down to Gulf Shores. We stayed in an RV park, which was something I never thought I’d do, but it was actually really cute and convenient– a 5 minute walk from the festival! After spending 2 hours covering ourselves in makeup, bubble braids, and glitter, it was time to go. It had to be 90 degrees out, but we didn’t care. As soon as we walked in, I was shocked by the atmosphere; the entire festival was on the beach! There were food stands everywhere, 4 stages, a DJ tent, hammocks, and so many people. We started at the Surf Stage where Oliver Tree performed. I was really excited to hear him because of his song “Alien Boy.” The crowd was ecstatic when that song came on! After this, we went to the DJ tent for quite some time. Though it was blazing hot in there, it was probably the most fun little tent to be inside. We were dancing our butts off for hours while multiple DJ’s came through!

Post Malone singing “Stay”

We can skip the rest of these little performances and start talking about the headliners. Zedd was amazing, with a strong start and lots of flames. Following Zedd was my favorite artist, Post Malone. We didn’t leave the crowd during the hour break between Zedd and Post Malone, and we spent this hour shoving our way to the front. We got pretty close! Post Malone was amazing– his performance was so meaningful and you could tell that he cared so much for his fans. I even cried when my favorite song, Circles, came on.

The next day, we were supposed to see Doja Cat, however she unfortunately canceled due to issues with her tonsils. On the bright side, Lil Yachty had to be the most fun performance ever. He handed out water bottles for his performance, and made everyone open them and throw them in the air at the same time– it was awesome!

Overall, Hangout Fest was the experience of a lifetime and I will definitely be returning next year. Not only was it so much fun, but it also brought me so much closer to my cousin!

3 Simple Ways to Kick Start Your Health & Wellness Journey

Health and Wellness can be an intimidating topic. With its definition ranging from rigorous 7-day programs including 5:00am workouts and counting macronutrients to the contrary, taking simply 5-minutes a day to sit in meditation. While both definitions can be true, starting either can be challenging. In this article we’ll touch on simple things that can make starting your journey to your optimal wellness goal a little bit easier.

  • Figure out what you really want

Getting clear on what your intention of starting your health and wellness journey really is makes it a lot easier to keep going when it seems overwhelming. Ask yourself some of these questions:

“What do I want to get out of this?”

Do you want to improve your physical strength? Do you want to become more mindful? Do you want to show yourself that you can exercise discipline without the help of anyone else? Do you want to become better at cooking? Do you want to just know that you’re completing one task daily that contributes to your overall wellness? Figuring out what your “why” is and asking some of these questions can provide a lot of clarity and help you figure out where you want to begin on your journey.

  • Set manageable and realistic goals

It’s very easy to say that you want to be the type of person that wakes up early, goes to the gym everyday consistently, eats healthy, and drinks a gallon of water a day. However, those are 5 different changes you’d be making to your daily life. Realistically, incorporating all of these changes will result in 5 different habit changes, and all at once those could be very hard to keep up or will result in failure. If you fail at one of these goals early on it could be very easy to decide to give up early on, therefore setting smaller realistic goals in the beginning is the best way to create these new habits.

  • Give yourself some grace

Give yourself some grace, changing old habits is not an easy thing to do. I think the emphasis on this whole article should be on the fact that it is a journey. Most journey’s aren’t linear. There will be ups and downs, easy days and hard times, and those where you’re extremely motivated and some days where you’re not at all. Throughout all of them it’s extremely important to give yourself some room to make errors while keeping your goals in the forefront of your mind!

Intern Insights: Black History Month at Clemson

February is the month of relationships. Whether intentional or not we all start thinking about relationships well before the 14th arrives. This can mean celebrating with a romantic partner or celebrating with Galentines. Romantic relationships are not the only relationships to be celebrated this month though. I think in order to strengthen all of our relationships and really understand each other we must understand where we each come from. Black History Month is something that everyone can celebrate, not only just those of us who are black but others as well because we are all a family, especially here at Clemson. Together we can honor the history that has come before us and learn how we can make our present and future better.

Nationwide, institutions and individuals are celebrating this month in various ways. Below are some of the ways that our Clemson Community is celebrating Black History Month.

The Gantt Multicultural Center is hosting many different events. Some of the upcoming events include:

February 15 Keynote Speaker: Alex Tha Great

February 16 Ancestry Workshop

February 18 Game Night Sweets & Spades

February 20: Call My Name Tours

February 20: Woodland Cemetery Tours

February 22: For the Culture: Open Mic Night | Special Guest: Ebony Stewart

February 23: Black Caucus Meeting

February 24: Guest Speaker: Dr. Millicent Brown

This past weekend, the Gantt Center partnered with Clemson Athletics to host Soul Food Sunday. This event brought students, faculty, and student-athletes together over a delicious meal. There was music, dancing, and games truly giving it a family cookout feel. Everyone gathered and found community through this event. It was special getting to see so many students together who had never seen one another before – all enjoying the afternoon together.

Soul Food Sunday

In honor of Black History Month, Student-Athlete development created UNITY bracelets for our Clemson athletes. The first of this month I was happy to be able to help hand out these wristbands as our athletes walked in the doors of the Nieri Student-Athlete Enrichment Center. As they got their wrist bands we asked the athletes “What do you want your legacy to be at Clemson?”. They each took their time and wrote down a word, phrase, or paragraph explaining what legacy they want to leave behind once they graduate. The answers varied and were each incredibly powerful.

“Be the best teammate I can possibly be” “I want my legacy to be that I gave 100% in the classroom and on the field” “Make the world a more inclusive place” “Inspire other African-Americans to be great in this world” “Be that dude” “Someone who cared for others”

Legacy Poster Wall Example

These are just some of the many legacies that they wrote down. I challenge you right now to pause and think about what you want your legacy to be. Write it down even. It really is powerful to think that each of us will have a legacy and we get to choose what that will be.

As a leader within Tigers Unite – a Clemson student-athlete led organization, I was very honored to be able to help put this event together. MCA, our Multicultural Alliance, was able to connect athletics with the rest of the Clemson community. My hope for the event was that students and faculty from all different parts of our family could come together to just see new faces and make new connections. There was lots of happiness in the air at this event and I am sure that the Black History Month celebrations in the future will continue to be even more unifying. Some questions to ponder this month as we continue to celebrate Black History are “Why do I believe this is important to celebrate? And “What can I do to celebrate?”

Intern Insight: Favorite College Recipes!

5 of my Favorite Easy College Recipes that Taste Delicious!

Hello everyone, it’s me again! This semester was my first time living off-campus, and with that came having to cook my own meals. I’ve never cooked before this semester, so I definitely had low expectations! But, let me tell you: With these 5 easy recipes, you can convince yourself that you are a master chef! Think of this as a sort of guide on easy college dinners to cook for yourself!

The cookbook that my Mom made me

Ground Turkey Taco Bowl

This is my favorite healthy recipe because it certainly does not taste healthy! Ground turkey is a great healthy alternative to ground beef, and with this recipe, you cannot even taste the difference. The ingredients consist of:

  • 1 pound of lean ground turkey
  • 1 can of black beans (I prefer the reduced sodium beans)
  • 1 package of taco seasoning (I prefer mild)
  • 1 bag of shredded four cheese mexican mix

Directions:

Step 1: Place the ground turkey in a pan and cook on high. While cooking, cut the ground turkey into tiny pieces.

Step 2: Once the ground turkey is mostly cooked, pour out the excess water. Place the ground turkey back on the stove after this.

Step 3: Pour the taco seasoning onto the ground turkey and stir.

Step 4: Scoop the black beans out of the can with a spoon, and place them in the pan. (You don’t have to use the full can… use as many beans as you desire!)

Step 5: (Remember that this is all while cooking, so keep the heat on.) Sprinkle as much cheese as you would like into the pan. Once everything is mixed up and melted, remove the pan from the heat.

Step 6: Scoop it into a bowl, add guacamole, and enjoy!

Alfredo Pasta

This is probably the easiest recipe to exist, and is also the best pasta you’ll ever have!

Ingredients:

  • 1 box of ziti pasta (you can use whichever type of pasta you like, I just prefer ziti with this recipe.)
  • 1 jar of Ragu Alfredo Sauce
  • Oregano
  • Garlic powder
  • Grated parmesan cheese

Directions:

Step 1: Boil water in a large pot, pour in the pasta and cook for about 10 minutes (or whichever time the directions say on the box.)

Step 2: Once the timer runs out, pour the pasta into a strainer. Place the pasta back into the pot and place back on the stove with low heat.

Step 3: Pour in the alfredo sauce and mix.

Step 4: Add desired amount of oregano and garlic powder.

Step 5: Add desired amount of parmesan cheese; I usually pour a layer over the top and then mix.

Step 6: Turn off the heat, place in a bowl and eat!

Chipotle Chicken Sausage and Cilantro Lime Rice Bowl

My roommate introduced me to chicken sausage, and I fell in love with it! Trust me, I know it sounds gross, but don’t knock it until you try it. The chipotle flavored chicken sausage has monterrey jack cheese inside of it– it is so tasty!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack of chipotle flavored chicken sausage
  • 1 cup of minute white rice
  • Cilantro
  • 1 lime
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper

Directions:

Step 1: Cut up the chicken sausage into bite size pieces. Place in a pan and cook on medium-high heat for 6-8 minutes.

Step 2: Boil 1 cup of water in a pot, place the rice into the boiling water, cover the pot and remove it from the heat. Leave this covered for 5 minutes.

Step 3: Pour out any excess water in the rice– if there is any– and then mix in the chopped up cilantro, garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste.

Step 4: Cut up the lime and squeeze in as much lime juice as desired.

Step 5: Mix the rice and chicken sausage into a bowl and enjoy!

Chicken Stuffed with Ham and Cheese & Mashed Potatoes

I promise it’s easier than it sounds, and so very tasty! The chicken is my mother’s recipe, and the mashed potatoes are just a side I make with them… you could replace this with any side that you’d like!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of chicken breasts
  • ½ pound of ham– sliced very thin
  • ½ pound of swiss cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • Italian style bread crumbs
  • Reser’s Steakhouse Mashed Potatoes

Directions:

Step 1: Cut the chicken breasts in half

Step 2: Place a few slices of ham and about 2 slices of cheese on top of a chicken breast. Layer a second chicken breast on top of this to make a sort of “sandwich.”

Step 3: Mix two eggs in a bowl, pour the bread crumbs into a second bowl. Dip this “sandwich” into the eggs, and then into the bread crumbs.

Step 4: Pour a thin layer of oil in a baking dish. Place the chicken breasts in this baking dish. Put this in the oven at _______ for ___ minutes. Spoon oil over the chicken periodically.

Step 5: Follow the directions on the microwavable mashed potatoes. I personally put two cloves of garlic in the mashed potatoes after warming them up, and some salt and pepper!

Step 6: Put the mashed potatoes and the chicken on a plate and eat up!

Beef Stroganoff

My mother also wrote this recipe for me… in case you couldn’t tell by now, my mother made me a little recipe book! (Cutest mom ever). However, I came up with some of these recipes by myself! Anyways, I’ve never even heard of beef stroganoff until I read the recipe book, but I am OBSESSED with it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of boneless beef sirloin
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • 1 can of Cream of Mushroom Soup (Don’t shy away from this recipe because of the cream of mushroom soup!! I thought it would be disgusting too, because I hate mushrooms. Just trust me on this one, you won’t regret it!)

Beef Stroganoff that I made 🙂

  • 1 medium onion, chopped up
  • ½ tablespoon of paprika
  • ½ cup of sour cream
  • 1 bag of egg noodles

Directions:

Step 1: Slice the beef into bite size pieces. Simultaneously, boil a pot of water and cook the egg noodles as instructed on the package.

Step 2: On medium high heat, place 1 tablespoon of oil in a different pan and brown the beef. Take the beef out of the pan and set it aside once this is complete.

Step 3: Leaving the pan there, reduce the heat to medium, add the second tablespoon of oil, add the onion, and cook until the onion is tender.

Step 4: Add the soup and paprika, heat to a boil, and stir in the sour cream.

Step 5: Add the beef back into the pan, heat through, and pour over the noodles. Now, try this wonderful creation that tastes like a million bucks!

I really hope that these quick, easy, and delicious recipes help anyone who struggles with cooking! If you try these recipes, you will definitely change your opinion on cooking, as it can actually be a fun activity 🙂

Intern Insight: How to Stay Active Over Break

5 Ways To Stay Active Over Break!

With winter break now here, there are many things on our minds. Getting to see hometown friends & family and getting a true break from ‘work’ are at the forefront for me. One thing lingering in the back of my mind though is how will I stay active over break? As a student-athlete it is necessary for me to maintain my physical strength and endurance over break so that when we come back the whole team can hit the ground running. If I slack then not only will it be noticeable but it will also make the workouts in the spring that much harder to endure. So with that being said, my winter break training plan is something that I think of often. Even if you are not a student-athlete though, I think it is healthy to keep your mind and body active. This has proven to help with overall happiness and productivity.

To explain why these are some of the many benefits gained from working out I did a quick google search so I could provide the exact science behind it. Essentially, when you workout your body naturally increases certain chemicals like endorphins, dopamine, adrenaline, and endocannabinoid. All of these are associated with feeling happy and less anxiety and stress. As for productivity, according to an article titled Exercise Increases Productivity on Brookings.edu by Robert C. Pozen, “Physical exercise stimulates the development of new mitochondria within your cells, meaning that your body will be able to produce more ATP over time. That gives you more energy to exert yourself physically, but it also means more energy for your brain, boosting your mental output” (Pozen 2012). There are countless benefits to having regular physical activity in your life so it just depends on which benefits really resonate with you.

Below are 5 ways to stay active this winter break that I personally enjoy and find fairly easy to do even with it being just a couple weeks of being at home.

Hot Yoga/Yoga membership

This has become one of my absolute favorite ways of working out. I have done yoga for years but in the past couple of years I have fallen in love with hot yoga. There are many different types, like Bikram with its 26 poses or Power flow yoga with the many up dog down dogs. I enjoy every type of yoga and think that they each can provide different benefits. To me yoga is a very peaceful meditative practice but it also is an incredibly good workout. With the room being so hot, I sweat a puddle every single time. I leave yoga with a relaxed mind but also a body that has been stretched and strengthened. Many yoga studios have great discounts for first time students so I encourage you to try different studios while using these special offers. Once you find a yoga studio you really like then you can buy a package of classes for just the couple of weeks that you are home.

Nature Trail Run/Hikes/Walks with dogs or friends

Another one of my favorite ways of being active is being in nature on beautiful hiking trails. I typically run the trails because I love how it feels on my knees and feet opposed to running on concrete or the treadmill. But if I have my dogs with me or I meet a friend to catch up with then walking the trails is always a good option as well. Something about being in the open air with nature just refreshes me, especially my lungs.

Percy Warner Park. This is my favorite place to go on my nature walks/runs in Nashville.

Gym membership

Probably the most traditional way of working out would be to go to the gym. Some of you may already have gym memberships but for those of you who do not there are many gyms that will provide you with a student discount for a singular membership. I am sure that there are also places that will allow you to get a membership just for the month that you will be in town. The good thing about having access to a gym is that you have so much equipment to utilize. You can run, bike, swim, lift weights, and most importantly for me… erg! That is the main reason why I need to have access to a gym this break is because I need to be able to erg. If you do not know what this is, (it’s okay, many do not) it is the rowing machine. Since I am on the Women’s Rowing team here at Clemson it would probably be a good idea to do some rowing over this break. So with my gym membership I will be taking advantage of the erg machines but also all of the other various equipment that they provide in their facilities. Oh and also the sauna & steam room are nice features that I like to enjoy at the gym as well.

Here’s me on the erg machine at our boathouse here in Clemson.

Peloton/Biking

This one is very specific, because obviously not everyone has a Peloton at home. We do have a Peloton so I will be starting many of my days with a ride to get some cardio in. For those of you who do not have a Peloton, if someone in your family is considering getting one I do think it is a great investment in your health. But that being said it is indeed an investment and everyone has different places they would rather put their money into. So if you do not have a Peloton then just traditional biking is amazing. Going on bike rides around town is a great way to get fresh air in the lungs and get those legs pumping.

Walking

This last way of exercise may be simple but it should not be overlooked. While all of the above listed ways are great for you, they can also be somewhat vigorous. So for someone who wants to be active but does not necessarily want to be dripping in sweat everyday then walking is a great option. Taking a morning walk to start your day or an evening stroll can do so much. Just getting your legs moving and also intentionally not being on your phone or glued to another device can be so relaxing for your overall mental. Try and fit a daily or weekly walk into your schedule and I’m sure it will quickly become something you look forward to. I noticed during covid when we did not have access to that many different ways of working out, many people started to walk more. While this is not something that I have included in my routine I definitely see the value and do not underestimate how beneficial these can be for overall health.

Now while some of these include purchases of memberships or equipment, all of these various ways of working out can be done without purchases as well. There are so many YouTube videos for Yoga or at-home workouts that if you would rather stay in the convenience of your home then that is perfectly reasonable too. If you want to stay active this break, these are just a couple ideas to help encourage and inspire you to do so. Check out our latest video on Youtube (@ClemsonCOMM) to see our Club of the Month for November 2021!

Morgan Pinson, President of CEPA 2021

For the month of November we interviewed the president of CEPA, Morgan Pinson. Morgan Pinson is a senior Anthropology major at Clemson University. Morgan joined and became president of CEPA this year… I’d say that’s pretty impressive! As President, Morgan oversees all other executive positions in CEPA and strives to involve new members in the club.

CEPA began a few years ago. Due to COVID-19, however, CEPA is basically starting fresh this year with an entire new executive board and new ideas for the club! CEPA had an event last Thursday, November 11, 2021, where a guest speaker came in to talk about their experiences in working with conventions and companies– they shed light on the corporate side of event planning.

For their next event, CEPA has invited a past president of the organization to talk to members about her career and what it is like as an event planning professional!

Meet the Department: William Ratliff

Although we may be limited in our interactions, we definitely do not want to be strangers. Our Meet the Department series hopes to introduce you to our faculty and staff that support our undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Communication.

Meet: William Ratliff

Today we would like to introduce one of our newest staff members, William Ratliff. Will is a lecturer in the Department of Communication who is teaching Communication 2500 this year.

He studied Communication, Technology, and Culture during his undergrad at Bridgewater College. Will got his M.A. at the University of Dayton studying Communication. After being a TA, Will is excited to embark on this new teaching journey and all that comes with it.

Will did his graduate work in Dayton, Ohio which he says is a little flatter and colder than Clemson so he is very happy to be down here in these beautiful hills. He often walks by the Rowing docks and the trails around there enjoying the nature and beauty of Clemson. If you ever see him, be sure to say hello!

Watch the video below to learn more about William Ratliff and his experience at Clemson so far.
