The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado is actively recruiting undergraduates from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and other Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) for its Mini-Semester Program from January 6-8, 2020.

Students will spend three days during winter break learning about interdisciplinary energy research opportunities. They’ll interact with scientists and researchers, attend lectures on current projects, participate in hands-on science activities that directly relate to current research and attend laboratory tours to experience work in progress. Details are included in the attached flier NREL Mini-Semester-2020, as well as links to the application and a video highlighting some of last year’s participants.

The application window is open and completed applications are due on Monday, November 18. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to apply.

Clemson students in the College of Science and CECAS are invited to apply to visit IACMI, MDF, and ORNL near Knoxville, TN, over fall break.

We anticipate that we will have opportunities to learn about these facilities, as well as Innovation Crossroads and the SULI program.

We will depart Clemson on Sunday, 13 October, spend Monday, 14 October, there, and return to Clemson Monday afternoon.

Transportation (driving) and accommodation (two students/two bed room) will be funded.

Monday breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Our group can include twelve students.

Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.  Please check out the lab site and see if there is work that will interest you.

With sufficient advance notice, many non-US citizens can be approved to attend (ORNL will handle approvals).

The application has ten questions (simple profile queries:  name, CUID, major, year of graduation, etc).

One additional question asks you to tell us why you want to participate in this opportunity (not more than 1000 characters — about 250 words).

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU):

Environmental Engineering Solutions for Pollution Prevention (EESPP-REU)

Applications are being accepted for the summer 2019 Environmental Engineering Solutions for Pollution Prevention REU at the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB). The EESPP-REU, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, provides undergraduates an opportunity to conduct faculty-mentored, laboratory, field, or modeling research on pollution prevention projects. This will be the 10^th annual summer REU offering at UB.

EESPP-REU students receive one-on-one mentoring in the conduct of environmental research, focused training in environmental and professional ethics, GRE training, and exposure to a variety of research methods. The program includes weekly group meetings to share research progress, and culminates with a symposium where students present research findings in oral and poster formats. Additional funding is available for REU participants to attend national conferences to present their research results. To network with faculty and peers, students attend fieldtrips throughout western New York, Niagara Falls, and the lower Great Lakes region.

REU participants receive a $5,250 stipend and free on-campus housing in a LEED-certified student complex. Participation is limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and students must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college program through Fall 2019 (graduating seniors are ineligible). Eligible students interested in environmental/civil/chemical engineering, environmental science, biology, chemistry, geology, or geography are encouraged to submit an online application. Rural areas are fundamental to human well-being. Within the United States, rural areas

provide unique resources such as the infrastructure for food and bioenergy production as

well as the transportation infrastructure from inland urban centers to ports. Despite this, little

attention is paid to the unique challenges and opportunities these areas face with respect to

building and maintaining civil infrastructure.

In this ten-week summer research program, students will work with faculty and graduate

students in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to

improve our understanding of how best to address the challenges facing rural

environments. Through collaboration with industry partners, students will also be given

opportunities to learn how infrastructure challenges are currently being addressed by civil

engineering industry.

NSF-REU in Re-inventing the Nation’s Urban Water Infrastructure

The National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Re-inventing the Nation’s Urban Water Infrastructure (ReNUWIt) is now accepting applications for its Summer 2019 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program. Participants will conduct mentored research in ReNUWIt faculty lab groups at Colorado School of Mines, New Mexico State University, Stanford University, and University of California at Berkeley.
