Three Ph.D. positions, Virginia Tech

Dr. Zhiwu (Drew) Wang’s lab in Virginia Tech is recruiting three Ph.D. students to begin in Fall 2023 for the three projects described below.  Detailed information about application submission can be seen at https://aeesp.org/jobs/3015

1.Characterization of variability in MSW streams to identify critical material attributes for fuel production

A PhD or a MS student will be supported by this DOE project to understand the characteristics critical to turning low-cost, abundant municipal solid waste (MSW) into conversion-ready feedstocks for producing biofuels through gasification and solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) as targeted thermal and biological conversion technologies. Since this is a joint project among seven organizations, the candidate working on this DOE project will have the opportunity to learn collaborative skills between universities, national labs, and industrial partners. Candidates with experience in solid waste management are especially encouraged.

2.Pilot-scale bioplastic product fermentation and manufacturing from food wastes

A PhD will be supported by this USDA-funded project to convert a variety of food wastes to Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) which will be furthered processed into commercial grade bioplastic products such as flexible wrapping films or hard plastic containers that can not only be readily biodegradable in engineered systems but also in natural environments such as backyard composting or in the ocean. Candidates with experience in up-scaled biological processing and real-world research are especially welcomed.

3.Partial denitrification anammox technology for mainstream wastewater nitrogen removal

A Ph.D. or a M.S. student will be supported by this industrial project. The study will be performed in the Northern Virginia campus with the goal to achieve low energy and low carbon biological nitrogen removal from real municipal wastewater through a smart automatic controlling system. The success of this biotechnology would promote anammox technology into the full-scale application in mainstream wastewater treatment processes.

Post Doctoral Fellow – EPA Office of Research & Development

Description
EPA Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is currently available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER), Land Remediation and Technology Division (LRTD) located in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Research Project: This research project will develop new data and information on the effectiveness of different technologies and approaches for removing PFAS from the environment and managing PFAS and PFAS-containing materials. This information will inform decisions on drinking water and wastewater treatment, contaminated site cleanup and remediation, air emission controls, and end-of-life materials management. This information will also ensure that particular treatment and waste management technologies and approaches do not themselves lead to additional PFAS exposures, particularly in overburdened communities where treatment and waste management facilities are often located. EPA will continue efforts to develop approaches for characterizing PFAS in source waters, at contaminated sites, and near PFAS production and treatment/disposal facilities. This research effort will continue to evaluate and develop technologies for drinking water and wastewater treatment, contaminated site remediation, air emission controls, and destruction and disposal of PFAS-containing materials and waste streams. These efforts include conducting laboratory- and pilot-scale studies, which will inform the design of full-scale field studies done in partnership with facilities and states to evaluate real-world applications of different PFAS removal technologies and management approaches.

Learning Objectives: The research participant will be collaborating with scientific staff in CESER and potentially scientists from other EPA Labs, Centers or Offices, in training opportunities related to the evaluation of PFAS treatment technologies.
Under the guidance of a mentor, research activities may include:
• Learning new innovative technologies for PFAS remediation
• Operating, sampling, and data analysis of bench scale experiments related to PFAS treatment studies
• Preparing samples for analysis, including preparing and developing a Quality assurance project plan
• Participating in the operation of analytical instrumentation for PFAS analysis
• Contributing to developing outputs, including presentations and technical manuscripts

Mentor(s): The mentor for this opportunity is Mohamed Ibrahim (Ibrahim.mohamed@epa.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research, please contact the mentor(s).

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: ASAP. All start dates are flexible and vary depending on numerous factors. Click here for detailed information about start dates.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year and may be renewed up to three or four additional years upon EPA recommendation and subject to availability of funding.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Click here for detailed information about full-time stipends.
EPA Security Clearance: Completion of a successful background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is required for an applicant to be on-boarded at EPA.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. Participants do not become employees of EPA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Questions: Please see the FAQ section of our website. After reading, if you have additional questions about the application process, please email ORISE.EPA.ORD@orau.org and include the reference code for this opportunity.

Qualifications: The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:
• Experience with PFAS analysis using analytical instruments such as LC-MS-MS and experience in PFAS remediation as applied to environmental matrix
• Familiarity with literature search tools and strategies
• Laboratory research experience in sample collection, statistical analyses, and a general knowledge of good laboratory practices
Eligibility Requirements
