A lifelong photographer, Dr. Larry McCollough came to art photography after retiring from the philosophy department at Clemson University in 1998. Larry was a professor of philosophy at Clemson for 30 years. He has continued teaching philosophy at the Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI) and is currently instructing a class on the meaning of life.

Larry has exhibited in shows throughout the Upstate including Clemson, Anderson, Belton and Pickens. He has won several awards for his work. Samples of his work can be seen at the Wine Bar in Pendleton and Anderson as well as in the Alumni Restaurant in Clemson, the OLLI Building and the Emeritus College Gallery in Pendleton.

Sam Wang, Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Visual Arts, retired in 2006.

Since retirement in 2006, Sam has continued to lecture, create new photographs, and publish. The bilingual monograph SAM WANG: 4 Decades of Photographic Explorations was published in China in 2010. Photography and Expression, co-authored with Zhong Jianming, and HANDCRAFTED: The Art and Practice of The Handmade Print, co-authored with Sandy King, Christina Z Anderson, and Zhong Jianming were published in China in 2014 and 2015 respectively and are both in second edition.

His most recent shows include a solo show in Charlotte at the Light Factory in 2016 and invitational shows in China, Australia, and Belgium in 2017. Sam work also is on display at the Emeritus College Gallery in Pendleton, SC.

Sam received an Elizabeth Verner award from SC Governor Nikki Haley and the SC Arts Commission in 2015 in recognized for his contribution to the arts in SC.

Dr. Michael Morris, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, retired in 2013.

Ireland Regnier, Professor Emeritus of Visual Arts, retired in 1988.   “Painting and music have been with me my whole life! It has formed who I am today!” –I. Regnier

Growing up in Texarkana, Arkansas, Ireland began painting and playing the guitar and piano at a very young age. Mr. Regnier credits his mother for supporting him throughout his pursuit of the arts. Right out of high school at the age of 18, Mr. Regnier was drafted into the infantry during World War II. He fought in New Guinea and the Philippines and then served on a submarine base during the occupation of Japan. During the war, his mother sent him a shoebox filled with paints, brushes and a rolled canvas. He made room in his knap sack for this treasure and began to paint and draw at every opportunity. Although hard, he is thankful his art and music provided him an oasis during those horrendous years of war.

Returning to the United States, the Bronze Star decorated veteran set his sights on a life filled with art and music. While Mr. Regnier waited for the fall session to begin college, he played baseball and during that summer a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals invited him to play for the team. The offer was enticing, but his ideal was to hold a paintbrush instead of a baseball bat. He began attending the Kansas City Art Institute and completed his schooling in three years by attending classes day and night and throughout the summers. He found work drafting and rendering for several architectural firms and later began to teach art to college students. After teaching classes at St. Petersburg Junior College, he began teaching art to architectural students at Clemson College (University) in 1961 and retired in 1988.

During his long tenure at Clemson, Mr. Regnier also taught on sabbaticals in Mexico and London. He has paintings on permanent display in the Greenville County Art Museum, Greenville, South Carolina and the South Carolina State Capital in Columbia. His work also has been shown in the Liz Cox Art Gallery, Pendleton, South Carolina and Lee Art Gallery on the Clemson University campus and has been exhibited in various worldwide exhibits. Ireland also has works on display at the Emeritus College Gallery.

Dr. Walker Miller, Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology and Physiology and Extension Specialist, retired in 1999. He owns and operates The Happy Berry (www.thehappyberry.com) a u-pick berry farm in Six Mile, SC. He presents lecturers on global climate change. The lectures focus on “Agriculture: Part of the Problem and Solution.” He is an advocate of adaptation and mitigation for the future of agriculture and involved in discussions with our state legislators and University officials.

Dr. Stuart Silvers, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Chair, retired in 2011.

Teaching and Advising Details: Each semester I mentor foreign graduate students and teaching assistants to improve their English language proficiency

Other: I continue to participate as a grader in the Clemson English Speaking Proficiency (CESP) program

Elaine Richardson, Professor Emerita of Animal and Veterinary Sciences and Director, retired in 2014. In 2017, she coordinated a team to participate in Pledge the Pink, a 3 Day/ 3 Island/ 10 miles a day walk to raise money for screening, treatment, and breast cancer research.  Her team, the Tumornators, had 9 members

who collectively raised over $4000.

Published Writing Details: Conducted a survey to gather data about the use of advisory boards in learning centers. Volunteer Details: Serving on Clemson Historic West End neighborhood board.  Member of City of Clemson Board of Zoning Appeals.

President, Board of Directors for Carolina Cups,  nonprofit public charity dedicated to funding breast cancer screening, treatment and research.  Pledge the Pink (a 3 day, 10 miles per day walk) is the signature fundraising event for Carolina Cups.

Co-captain for Tumornators, a team participating in the Pledge the Pink walk for the second consecutive year.  The Tumornators represent the Clemson Area Bosom Buddies, a local breast cancer support group.  Event will be held October 26-28, 2018.

Vice-president, Board of Directors for Clemson Area Bosom Buddies, a breast cancer support group.  I’ve been involved in this support group since 1996.  In 2018, we applied for and received non-profit status.  I led application for grant from the Dabo Swinney All In Foundation to fund support group activities; results pending.

Led application for joint application (local residents, Clemson Arts and Cultural Commission, and Clemson Center for the Arts) for 2018 Hughes Investments Elevate Upstate Grant to provide seed money for IDEAS Festival.  We have been selected as one of 5 finalists, with presentation and final awards announced in mid November.

Appointment by Governor Henry McMaster to the Palmetto Unified School District Board, effective November 12, 2018.

Dr. John Morse, Professor Emeritus of Entomology, retired in 2008.

Conventional wisdom around Clemson has long been that, until very recently, avenues for emeritus faculty to continue Clemson-based scholarly activity were simply not available. John Morse, Professor Emeritus of Entomology, has demonstrated that, with a little determination, a high level of scholarly activity could be maintained long after the transition to emeritus status.

John will soon have been “retired” for ten years, yet he is still publishing, receiving awards, mentoring students, volunteering to teach Creative Inquiry and other courses, leading expeditions to exotic places to teach and collect specimens of caddisflies. Caddisflies? 

Well, for those of you who are not up-to-date on caddisflies, there are more than sixteen thousand different species of these aquatic insects that are related to moths and butterflies. Among other things, caddisflies are favorite models for the tied flies of trout anglers and are useful indicators of the extent to which a body of water has become polluted. Needless to say, John continues to be one of the world’s leading caddisfly researchers. Check out the stock caddisfly photo.

John has

contributed much to Clemson (where he and Suzanne have endowed a chair), to the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (where he is the school’s longest serving mentor), and other worthy endeavors.

Volunteer Details: I have taught Sunday School for children in grades 5-7 at First Baptist Church, Pendleton, SC, for the past 30+ years. I am a Deacon of the Church, and serve as Church Moderator and Sanctuary Choir member.

I led an expedition with two graduate students to collect caddisflies (Insecta: Trichoptera) in Vietnam during 21 June-6 July 2017.

Volunteer Details: Recently received “Certificate of Appreciation” from the Residents Advisory Council at Freedom Pointe in The Villages for eight years of service as Parliamentarian.

Dr. Bill Stringer, Professor Emeritus of Agronomy and Soils, retired in 2011. Dr. Stringer is passionate about native plants and gave a seminar entitled: Native Plants: Good Habitat for People and Animals to the Emeritus College faculty in 2017. He also has been bringing attention to the  decommissioning of some of the recreation areas in SC.  Bill is leading the effort to preserve Parks Mill in McCormick County.  This 12.8 acre site on Stevens Creek received permanent protected status through the efforts of the SC Native Plant Society, Naturaland Trust, and the Upper Savannah Land Trust.  This site is important for its large population of Rocky Shoals Spider Lily (Hymenocallis coronaria), a rare and beautiful native plant that grows in shoaly waters of Piedmont streams.  It only occurs in a very few places in South Carolina, and the Parks Mill site was the last significant unprotected population in SC until 2016.  In addition, there is a historic, largely intact, but non-functional, water-powered grist mill.
