In South Carolina, annual agricultural production losses due to wildlife damage (e.g., deer) are large in several crops, including cash crops, hayfields and grazing areas. Recent estimates for cash crops (e.g., soybean, cotton) show that millions of dollars are lost annually due to damage to the plants from their germination until harvest. Dr. Cory Heaton has ongoing research studies evaluating deer population pressure and yield damage, among other factors, statewide for several crops and has been the point of contact to farmers and Extension personnel for deer damage in South Carolina. Forage and livestock systems often struggle with losses due to deer grazing and wild hog damage, especially.
In this webinar, Dr. Heaton will discuss some concepts and strategies of control of deer population to minimize agricultural losses. Mr. Brian Beer will discuss fencing options for deer control in forage systems. Dr. Silva will moderate the discussion and provide input as needed. Questions will be welcomed.
