This year’s Inspiring Excellence Alumni Award recipients include two Distinguished Alumni and one Young Alumni, each representing the strength of the Clemson IE community across industries and career stages.
Distinguished Alumni Award
John M. Harris, Ph.D. 1999

Dr. John Harris is a leader in advanced analytics, optimization, and model risk management, with more than 25 years of experience applying industrial engineering principles to solve complex problems across industries.
Currently serving as Director of Model Validation at Synovus, Harris leads enterprise-level efforts to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of analytical and predictive models used in high-stakes decision-making. His work spans financial services, energy, aviation, and consulting, with contributions that have generated significant organizational value and even led to multiple patent applications.
Harris has also maintained a strong and consistent connection to Clemson throughout his career. He served as an adjunct faculty member for more than a decade, advised graduate students, supported research collaborations, and contributed as a member of the Industrial Engineering Advisory Board.
His career reflects not only technical excellence, but also a deep commitment to mentorship, collaboration, and advancing the field of industrial engineering.
Jeffrey S. Powell, B.S. 1996
Jeff Powell has built an exceptional career defined by leadership, service, and global impact. After earning his degree from Clemson, he served nearly three decades in the United States Navy, rising to the rank of Captain and leading complex engineering and operational efforts across the world.
Throughout his military career, Powell held numerous leadership roles, including commanding Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133 and serving as Commanding Officer of Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport. His work spanned multiple continents, overseeing large-scale infrastructure, logistics, and operational systems.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Powell transitioned into the private sector, where he now serves as a Vice President and Client Account Director at AECOM. In this role, he leads strategic infrastructure and design initiatives, supporting major clients across the United States and Europe.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Powell remains actively engaged with Clemson through mentorship and service, continuing to invest in the next generation of industrial engineers.
Young Alumni Award
Robert “Whit” Fanning, B.S. 2020

Robert “Whit” Fanning represents the next generation of industrial engineering leaders, demonstrating early-career success alongside a strong commitment to service and engagement.
Since graduating in 2020, Fanning has built an impressive career in management consulting with Accenture, where he has supported complex business and technology initiatives within the financial services industry. He quickly established himself as a high-performing professional, earning a promotion to Management Consultant within his first two years and contributing to large-scale projects, including work supporting one of the largest U.S. bank mergers in recent history.
In parallel with his professional growth, Fanning has continued to invest in his education and leadership development. He is currently pursuing his MBA at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, further strengthening his foundation in business strategy and leadership.
Fanning has remained deeply connected to Clemson Industrial Engineering, serving as a mentor, Young Alumni Board member, and ambassador for the department. He regularly supports student development and shares insights from his career, helping guide future industrial engineers as they explore their own paths.
His energy, drive, and commitment to excellence reflect the spirit of the Young Alumni Award and the lasting impact of a Clemson IE education.

Together, these alumni reflect the strength and versatility of Clemson Industrial Engineering – leading in their fields, solving complex challenges, and continuing to give back to the communities that shaped them.
We are proud to celebrate their achievements and the impact they are making across industries and around the world.
