MRED Alumni Named Greenville’s Best & Brightest

Two MRED Alumni Make Greenville Magazine’s 2015 List of Best and Brightest 35 and Under

Congratulations to Shelby Dodson (MRED ’10) and Austin Knapp (MRED ’11) for their selection to Greenville Business Magazine’s 2015 Best and Brightest 35 and Under. As noted in the preface of the magazine’s special section, this year’s recipients were selected not only for their professional accomplishments but for their commitment to give back to the community. Both Austin and Shelby have enjoyed many successes since their graduation from the Clemson MRED program and have become active supporters of the program as employers of interns, tour hosts and guest lecturers. 1st Year Students Tour Embassy Suites Construction Site

On September 28, the 1st Year MRED students enjoyed a presentation and tour of the Embassy Suites that is under construction at River Place in downtown Greenville. Leif Busby and Jay Alexander of Windsor Aughtry, the hotel developer, and Steve Barber of Brasfield Gorrie, general contractor, presented a case study of the land assemblage, construction challenges, and the public-private partnership with the City of Greenville. One of the more complex mixed-use developments in Greenville, the site was purchased in 2011 with construction commencing in early 2014. Completion is scheduled for June 2016 and the development will consist of 167 hotel rooms, a Ruth’s Chris restaurant, 9,000 square feet of addition retail and 8 luxury condominiums by developer Tom Croft.

Wilkins House & Claussen Bakery Tour

The Real Estate Preservation Feasibility class toured the Wilkins House and the Claussen Bakery in Greenville, SC as a class site visit. The Wilkins House was moved from Augusta Road in August 2014 to Mills Avenue. The Wilkins House, ca. 1870, serves as one of Greenville’s most historic structures. Neil Wilson, principal of Realty Link, helped make the relocation and rehabilitation possible. The Claussen Bakery is a historic Greenville bakery founded by German immigrant Johann Claussen.
