Follow Up Friday: Canvas Accessibility Week Part II

Two weeks ago was Canvas Accessibility Week, featuring numerous sessions dedicated to enhancing accessibility in Canvas course design. This Follow-up Friday post will cover two sessions from Accessibility Week: Multimedia & Accessibility and Creating Accessible Teaching Materials.

Multimedia and Accessibility

The first session covered in this post, Multimedia and Accessibility, was hosted by Digital Learning Strategist ‘Dara Abimbade. This session highlights the importance of accessibility in different forms of media.

Abimbade began the session by discussing the importance of accessibility. Then he explained general accessibility practices on different forms of media. He focused on alt text, the supplementary text included with images to allow screen readers to describe them; captions, text of spoken dialogue and sound cues in videos; transcripts, full-text alternatives of spoken visual content; and external content, tools that you can use to verify the accessibility of your content.

Accessibility is not just a legal requirement, but something imperative to ensuring the success of learners. Click the link below to view the session.

Creating Accessible Teaching Materials

The next session, titled Creating Accessible Teaching Materials, was hosted by Digital Learning Strategist James Butler. This session aimed to inform viewers on how to convert their course materials into accessible ones easily.

Butler began by explaining how instructors can make their documents accessible. Then he demonstrated how to utilize Microsoft’s accessibility checker tool on your documents. Next, he covered how to convert an image scan in Adobe into an interactive PDF as well as how to run Adobe’s accessibility checker.

In a digital learning environment where learners’ accessibility requirements may not be readily apparent, it is essential to create assignments that are accessible to all. To view the process, click the link below.
