Spring Semester Wrap Up

May 8, 2023

As the spring semester draws to a close, here are some suggestions for reviewing how the semester went and looking forward to coming terms.

Review Progress

Congratulations on the end of another semester! As you finish evaluating assignments and computing grades, it is a great time to think through what went well this term in your courses.

  • What instructional materials and assignments struck the most interest in your learners?
  • When did you see the most evidence of their progress in your discipline?
  • When did students make connections between the course content in your class and other classes or their own experience?
  • Do you have ideas for making improvements to the course going forward?

Plan Ahead

As you think of changes you would like to introduce, note them down and make plans for how to implement them. List two or three small changes that will make your course better the next time you teach it. Your future self will thank you for every detail you include now.

  • Are there any more updated materials or topics to incorporate into your course next time?
  • Where did students get stuck? What would facilitate a smoother learning process?
  • Is there a more active learning activity or a more creative discussion topic that you could try out?

Kaltura Trainings

Monday, May 8

1-1:30 PM: Basics I is an overview of Kaltura and how you can interact with it. It will introduce you to the difference between accessing Kaltura through Canvas and MediaSpace, the difference between My Media and Course Videos, adding an existing video to Kaltura, adding a collaborator (sharing a video), and embedding a video in Canvas.

2-2:30 PM: Basics II is a demonstration of using Kaltura to create videos. It will cover accessing the Kaltura recorder, creating a video using the recorder, basic video edits, accessing your created video, and adding machine-generated captioning.

Tuesday, May 9

1-1:30 PM: Advanced I is dedicated to creating interactive quizzes in your Kaltura videos. After this training, you can create a quiz in Kaltura, add a video quiz as an assignment in Canvas, access quiz results, and use the Kaltura Dropbox to let students submit videos.

2-2:30 PM: Advanced II focuses on quality pedagogy when using Kaltura. After this session, you will be able to implement best practices for using Kaltura and you will be able to explain how to use Kaltura to enhance your class.

Contact James Butler with questions about these sessions, or register for all four Kaltura training sessions.
