Fall interns share semester experiences

December 2, 2021

It’s the end of the 2021 fall semester at Clemson University, which means we are saying a fond farewell to this term’s printing and prototyping interns! Two of our Advanced Printing Lab Assistants share their thoughts and experiences from the past several months working in the Sonoco Institute’s pressroom.

Bryanna Thobe

Bryanna Thobe, Packaging Science, Junior

Sonoco Institute (SI): What is the biggest thing you learned this semester through your internship?

Bryanna Thobe (BT): This semester I was able to learn a lot about all aspects of flexographic printing and how to operate the printing press, which I found to be a very unique and enriching experience. I was also given the opportunity to improve my structural design skills through the use of the software equipment that was made available to me in the lab.

SI: What was your favorite project or experience?

BT: During our spare time, my fellows interns and I chose to take on a group design project. We were able to use the equipment in the Prototyping Lab, as well as our collective structural and graphic design skills, to construct two Clemson-themed putt-putt golf holes. It was a very rewarding experience to see this project transform over the course of the semester, and I was also able to grow a lot in my design skills by learning from my peers an supervisors in the lab.

Tyler Capps

Tyler Capps, Packaging Science, Senior

Sonoco Institute (SI): What is the biggest thing you learned this semester through your internship?

Tyler Capps (TC): The internship’s biggest benefit to me was that I gained more of a holistic picture of package print and production from my time spent interning. I feel that I have a more thorough understanding of the steps that encompass package design.

SI: What was your favorite project or experience?

TC: My favorite project I worked on had to be cutting and creating the life-sized tiger for the putt-putt course that resides in the lobby of the Harris A. Smith building on campus.
