Art by Jonathan Bolton (he/him)

Jonathan Bolton’s drawings derive from traditional acts of intense observation and sketching for the purposes of recontextualization. Through manipulations of value, excessive mark-making, and visual economy, his sketches transform into narratively ambiguous images that highlight the malleability of visual perception and the rash speed at which we confer meaning onto images.

He has exhibited work in solo, juried, and group exhibitions across South Carolina. His work was recently exhibited in Manifest Gallery’s DRAWN 2023 exhibition in Cincinnati, OH and will be published in their upcoming 15th International Drawing Annual.

He earned his BFA from Winthrop University and his MFA from Clemson University where he now teaches foundation and beginning drawing. Jonathan lives in Greenville, SC.
