SCEEES Staffers Enjoy an Ice Cream Innovation Experience

Thursday, July 11th was a hot day with temperatures reaching 90 degrees F. It was the perfect day for a Staff appreciation lunch followed by a team-building exercise at Clemson University’s Newman Hall, part of CAFLS (College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences at Clemson University) and home to the Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences (FNPS) program that provides yummy ice cream for the ’55 Exchange.

Clemson University college students led eight SCEEES Staff members and the School Director through the process of dividing into three teams. Each team was asked to decide on a team name, a new ice cream flavor and its ingredients including a base flavor, color (if any), choice of add-ins and/or swirls. Each team was asked to choose a team leader.  After an unexpected team leader shake-up, each new team was asked to give a creative pitch about what made their ice cream flavor so special and unique.  The three teams gave compelling pitches with two teams in a deadlock for the majority vote.

After much deliberation, the tie-breaking vote was decided by the FNPS student production manager.  Afterwards, the staff participated in making a small batch of their winning ice cream flavor.  Each staff member received a scoop of their ice cream and also were given a pint to take home. It was a great experience! A special ‘thank you’ goes out to Sara Cothran and Javin Goodine for helping arrange this activity for us.
