Benefits
• Stipend: Undergraduate students receive $750 per week and graduate students will receive $950 per week.
• Travel: A total of $1,000 travel reimbursement for inbound and outbound expenses for participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site, and who are paying for housing onsite is available.
• Housing Allowance: A housing allowance of $400/week is provided to participants whose home of record is more than fifty miles, one-way, from their assigned hosting facility, move onsite for the duration of their appointment, and are paying for housing while onsite. Alternatively, for those whose appointment is 100% virtual, a $50 virtual allowance will be added.
Appointment Details
• Appointments will be for 10 consecutive weeks during the months of May-July. Factors such as class schedules, housing availability and facility schedules may be taken into consideration when determining appointment start and end dates.
• Interns will be assigned to research projects and/or other technical activities under the guidance of a DHS mentor.
• An appointment involves daily participation at the host facility with the HS-POWER participant in residence at the specified location. Virtual appointments may be available for some appointments.
• HS-POWER participants are required to have health insurance coverage during the appointment period and to provide proof of this coverage prior to the start of the appointment.
Nature of Appointment
Participants will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DHS, or the hosting facility. Instead, participants will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE Letter of Appointment and Terms of Appointment.

    • You are solely responsible for following up with your recommenders to ensure timely completion.

    Qualifications
    To be considered, applicants must meet each of the following criteria:
    • Be a United States (U.S.) citizen as of the application deadline. Evidence of U.S. citizenship must be submitted to ORISE at the time appointment is accepted.
    • Be 18 years of age or older by desired start date.
    • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale.
    • Be majoring in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field which includes social sciences, with interest in homeland security research as described in the DHS Research Areas.

    Additional Information
    • For students enrolled at a 2-year institution during the 2023-2024 academic year: Internship assignment is contingent on the student providing proof of application to a 4-year institution at the time appointment is accepted. Clean Water Science Network’s Mentoring Program


Clean Water Science Network (CWSN) is currently seeking graduate students and alumni that are interested in becoming mentors for the CWSN mentoring program. Clean Water Science Network is a 501c3 started by UT Austin Environmental Engineering graduate students/alum (www.cleanwaterscience.org). This is the fifth year of our mentoring program, which started with 6 mentees in the first cohort and grew to 120 in the 2022-2023 cohort.

As a mentor, you will be paired with motivated and driven undergraduate students from Latin America interested in water-related graduate education. Your commitment would be 4-5 hrs per month and includes virtually meeting with your mentee and attending a structured set of monthly webinars and discussion groups (the 2nd and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7 pm CT, but recorded as well for those with occasional conflicts). This is a great opportunity to build your leadership and communication skills, strengthen your resume,  become more culturally aware, and network with other mentors from around the US. Last year we had participants in the program from many different academic and professional institutions, providing awesome networking opportunities!

Position Summary

 The Southern Appalachians Stream Restoration Specialist will be responsible for survey and design of aquatic habitat projects on and adjacent to National Forest Service lands in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Project types include, but are not limited to aquatic organism passage, sediment reduction, water quality improvement, stream channel restoration, habitat improvement and improved flood resiliency. Duties also include environmental compliance assistance, project management assistance and construction oversight. This position works in collaboration with Project Managers and reports to the Mid-Atlantic & Southern Appalachians Conservation Director. 

Ideally the candidate would be centrally-located in the region (near Asheville, NC). However, other locations within TU’s Southern Appalachians region (mountains of GA, NC, SC or TN) will be considered for the right candidate. Day trips and overnight travel to job sites is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assess or direct the assessment of project sites using various geomorphic and habitat survey techniques and standard surveyors’ equipment.
  • Develop hydrologic and hydraulic models for basis of design.
  • Develop base maps of existing conditions and proposed restoration design plans in AutoCAD for project construction.
  • Prepare design plans, cost estimates, and specifications for aquatic habitat restoration projects.
  • Assist with permitting and collection of pre-and post-construction data for monitoring of projects. 
  • Provide construction oversight for project implementation.
  • Implement multiple restoration projects simultaneously on and adjacent to National Forest land.
  • This position is a non-supervisory position.

This is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities. Requirements

  • B.S. in geology, physical geography, fluvial geomorphology, hydrologic engineering, civil engineering, biological systems engineering or similar with applied experience is required.
  • Experience with the development and applications of hydrologic and hydraulic computer models using HEC-RAS for state and federal permit requirements related to culvert replacements and in-stream habitat restoration. 
  • Expertise in channel design, stream simulation design, large wood addition techniques,.
  • Experience in construction document development using computer aided design software such as AutoCAD Civil3D.
  • A working knowledge of sediment transport principles and general landform processes related to riverine systems.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders including federal and state agencies, farmers, biologists, geologists, engineers, and other landowners.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with excellent time-management skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within the Southern Appalachians region. Valid driver’s license required.
  • Passion for protecting and restoring trout populations and their watersheds.

Desired Qualifications

  • P.E. or M.S. in fluvial geomorphology, geology, hydrologic engineering, civil engineering or biological systems engineering..
  • Experience with ESRI GIS software and Rivermorph.
  • Experience with project permitting, and supervision of multiphase stream restoration projects.

Work may at times be physically demanding. May require walking and maintaining balance on slippery surfaces and sloping, highly uneven stream banks, and in conditions of moderate streamflow; may require lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying of field equipment over long distances. The position will also require day travel to remote areas.

Grad Students Interested in Engineering Education

I hope your spring term is off to a good start. I’m writing because I have funding available to support a graduate student who is interested in pursuing an MS/PhD in Engineering Education.

Between my colleagues in the Experiential Engineering Education department and I, we have funding for five graduate students to start in Fall 2023/Spring 2024. The project that I have funding for involves implementing and evaluating an intervention to support low-income engineering students via a living-learning community and a leadership development program. Three Ph.D. positions, Virginia Tech

Dr. Zhiwu (Drew) Wang’s lab in Virginia Tech is recruiting three Ph.D. students to begin in Fall 2023 for the three projects described below.  Detailed information about application submission can be seen at https://aeesp.org/jobs/3015

1.Characterization of variability in MSW streams to identify critical material attributes for fuel production

A PhD or a MS student will be supported by this DOE project to understand the characteristics critical to turning low-cost, abundant municipal solid waste (MSW) into conversion-ready feedstocks for producing biofuels through gasification and solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) as targeted thermal and biological conversion technologies. Since this is a joint project among seven organizations, the candidate working on this DOE project will have the opportunity to learn collaborative skills between universities, national labs, and industrial partners. Candidates with experience in solid waste management are especially encouraged.

2.Pilot-scale bioplastic product fermentation and manufacturing from food wastes

A PhD will be supported by this USDA-funded project to convert a variety of food wastes to Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) which will be furthered processed into commercial grade bioplastic products such as flexible wrapping films or hard plastic containers that can not only be readily biodegradable in engineered systems but also in natural environments such as backyard composting or in the ocean. Candidates with experience in up-scaled biological processing and real-world research are especially welcomed.

3.Partial denitrification anammox technology for mainstream wastewater nitrogen removal

A Ph.D. or a M.S. student will be supported by this industrial project. The study will be performed in the Northern Virginia campus with the goal to achieve low energy and low carbon biological nitrogen removal from real municipal wastewater through a smart automatic controlling system. The success of this biotechnology would promote anammox technology into the full-scale application in mainstream wastewater treatment processes.
