Hosted by Clemson’s General Engineering Department, Major Discovery Night is an annual event designed to help students learn more about engineering majors, connect with alumni and industry professionals, and meet faculty and staff from undergraduate engineering departments across the College of Engineering, Computing and Allied Sciences. For many students, the event it an important step in learning how difference engineering majors connect to their interests, strengths and long-term goals.
Industrial Engineering was represented by faculty, staff, current students and alumni, giving students multiple perspectives on the major and its career pathways. Throughout the evening, students stopped by the IE area to pick up handouts, ask questions, talk with current students and hear alumni examples of where an industrial engineering degree can lead.

The IE area saw steady traffic throughout the evening, with students asking detailed questions about the major, course topics, career options and the types of problems industrial engineers solve. Conversations highlighted the versatility of industrial engineering, including its focus on improving systems, optimizing processes, supporting better decision-making and designing solutions that work for people.
For many students still exploring their options, the even offered a chance to better understand how industrial engineering connects technical problem-solving with real-world impact. Faculty, staff, students and alumni helped explain how IE applies across industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, consulting, technology and human-centered systems.
“Major Discovery Night gives us an important opportunity to meet students while they are still exploring where they fit within engineering. The level of interest and the quality of the questions we heard throughout the evening show that students are eager to understand how industrial engineering can help them make an impact across many different fields.”

The department’s participation in Major Discovery Night reflects a broader effort to build awareness of industrial engineering among General Engineering students. By creating more opportunities for students to interact with faculty, current students and alumni, the department is helping students see not only what industrial engineering is, but also what is can make possible.
“Events like this are especially valuable because students get to hear about IE from several angles,” said Kathy Snipes, Engagement Coordinator for the department. “They can ask faculty about academics, talk with current students about the student experience and hear from alumni about how the degree translates into careers. That combination helps make the major feel more concrete and accessible.”

As students continue exploring their path in engineering, Clemson IE remains focused on helping them understand the major’s flexibility, career opportunities and impact. Major Discovery Night provided another strong example of that work in action, with meaningful conversations, high student engagements and growing interest in the many possibilities within IE.
