Allocation Engine

Canvas has redesigned the Peer Review Allocation Engine to automatically pair reviewers with available submissions instead of matching students directly. This change allows peer reviews to continue being assigned until the assignment’s Available Until date, giving instructors greater flexibility when managing late submissions. Instructors can also manually customize reviewer pairings using Allocation Rules.

Independent Due Dates and Points

Peer reviews now function as sub-assignments with their own due dates and point values, separate from the parent assignment. This allows instructors to set a distinct deadline for completing peer reviews and assign points specifically for the review activity. These peer review items also appear independently throughout Canvas.

Student Experience

Students now see the main assignment and its peer reviews as separate items. If an instructor requires students to submit their work before reviewing, they must do so before accessing their assigned peer reviews. When multiple reviews are assigned, students can navigate between them using a dropdown menu and complete each review through the Submission to Review tab, rubric tools, and comment features. After completing all reviews, students submit them collectively and receive a confirmation.

Instructor Experience

Instructors benefit from an enhanced SpeedGrader interface that displays completed peer review rubrics, scores, ratings, and comments. They can also assign their own score to each peer review and navigate between reviews more easily. Importantly, the grading workflow for the original assignment remains unchanged, preserving familiar processes while adding clarity and structure to peer review grading.

This document provides a list of all the items available in the course navigation menu within Clemson University’s Canvas environment and how they might be used in your course. To keep your course organized and easy to navigate, we recommend hiding any menu items that are not used.
