First impressions matter, even in digital spaces! Whether you’re teaching asynchronously, synchronously, or somewhere in between, the start of the semester is your chance to set the tone for a connected, inclusive, and engaged classroom. And yes—it is possible to break the ice digitally.

Here are a few digital icebreakers that actually work in online courses (and don’t make students cringe):
1. “Two Truths and a Lie” – Discussion Board Edition
Prompt students to share three facts about themselves—two true, one false—and have their peers reply with guesses. This encourages low-pressure interaction and gives you early insight into your students’ personalities.
2. “This Is My Workspace” Photo Thread
Invite students to post a photo of where they do schoolwork, whether it be a desk, couch, car, or kitchen table. This helps humanize the online space and highlights the wide range of learning environments.
3. “What’s in Your Ears?” Playlist Sharing
Ask students to share a song they listen to while working or relaxing. Compile the responses into a collaborative class playlist using Spotify or YouTube for a fun, shared resource.
4. “About Me” Visual Slide
Have students create one slide introducing themselves with a photo, favorite quote, or fun fact. Then post the slideshow in Canvas or present it in a Zoom session to build class rapport.
5. “Chat-Style Roll Call” in Synchronous Sessions
Instead of a formal name roll, ask a silly or lighthearted question (e.g., “What’s your favorite breakfast food?”) and have each student respond in the chat along with their name.
The best digital icebreakers are low-stakes, quick to complete, and offer a window into students’ lives—without demanding too much vulnerability. They’re also a great way for instructors to participate and model approachability from day one.
