On November 20th, Digital Learning Strategist James Butler facilitated a Workshop Wednesday presentation dedicated to understanding the impacts of trauma on learning. The presentation offers a detailed explanation of trauma-informed pedagogy and explores how applying these strategies to course design can help strengthen the educational experience for everyone.
Butler defines trauma as “An event or circumstance resulting in harm (physical or emotional, and/or life-threatening) that has lasting effects on one’s mental, physical, or emotional health, as well as one’s spiritual or social well-being.” He also states that trauma is not simply a personal problem to overcome as a result of lack of strength. From there, Butler introduces the idea of trauma-informed pedagogy, which asserts that student and instructor behavior is the result of lived experiences and that empathy leads the intervention or interaction, while student learning always remains the focus. To implement such a pedagogy into course design, instructors should remember to be clear and consistent with course elements and expectations, give opportunities for student empowerment, and provide support and connection to all students.
Overall, this session provides audiences with important information regarding the necessity of utilizing a trauma-informed pedagogy for course design and offers instructors helpful suggestions for how to get started with the strategies offered by the pedagogy.
