Last week was Canvas Accessibility Week, which featured several sessions highlighting methods to increase accessibility in Canvas courses. This Follow up Friday post will showcase the first two of those sessions: Building and Designing Accessible Assessments in Canvas and Designing for All: Online Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning.
Building and Designing Accessible Assessments in Canvas
Leslie Fuller, Digital Learning Strategist for Clemson Online, hosted the first session. This session focused on building and designing accessible assessments in Canvas.
Fuller began by showcasing different frameworks of accessible design. Then she showcased different formats and went into depth on the Canvas tools: Rich Text Editor, Classic Quizzes, and New Quizzes. Finally, Fuller reviewed examples of various models and assignment types.
Designing assessments that are accessible to all is incredibly important for effective course design. Click the link below to access the session.

Millie Tullis, Digital Learning Strategist, hosted the next session. Her session focused on digital accessibility and universal course design.
Tullis started the session by defining “digital accessibility.” Then she transitioned into the impact of accessibility and why it is important. Next, Tullis addressed Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Following that, she discussed how to apply UDL principles to online learning.
The first step toward creating accessible courses is understanding the necessity of accessibility. Click the link below to view the session.
