Accessible Assignment Design
Transparent Assignment Design

One framework people use regarding accessible design is the TILT Framework, which stands for Transparency in Learning and Teaching. Through this framework, you are considering how to be transparent about what you design for your assignment by clearly and fully explaining the purpose, task, and criteria for each assignment. This benefits students by allowing them to focus on completing the assignment, rather than worrying about how to interpret it. For the instructor, it makes grading easier, as you have already defined clear expectations, and it means you receive fewer logistical issues from students.
Multiple Means of Engagement, Representation, and Expression
Another framework to consider is the Universal Design for Learning, which focuses on creating assignments that are open and accessible to all students by presenting multiple options for how information is presented and demonstrated. It is helpful to allow students to find their own topics, sources, and methods when appropriate for a course. It is beneficial to allow students to draw from a wide range of source material and provide alternatives to auditory or visual information.
Through this framework, you design assignments that allow students to have more agency to choose how to demonstrate their understanding of course materials. There is no single approach that is best for all students; some may excel with an exam, while others are more suited to an essay. Many students would benefit from assignments that will enable them to choose how to meet the assessment criteria. From written reports to presentations, audio/video presentations, infographics, or more, you never know where a student may excel most.
Prioritize Formative Feedback
Instead of waiting until a final assignment is turned in, provide constructive feedback throughout the design phase. Foster a growth mindset, rather than focusing on being evaluated. It is helpful to encourage students to share their progress throughout the process to allow guidance. Focus on supporting self-assessment and reflection.
Building with Canvas Tools
Rich Text Editor
The Rich Text Editor is where you are going to put any of the text related to an assignment, whether it be instructions or discussion board formatting. The following are general guidelines to be aware of when utilizing this tool.
- Ensure your text is not reliant on color to convey meaning, and use sufficient color contrast to ensure visibility for all.
- Structure your text with clear headers and list formatting to appropriately break up the text.
- If you use images, include alternative text for viewers using screen readers.
- When using videos, ensure they are always captioned.
- Utilize the canvas Accessibility Checker to ensure your design is accessible.
Classic Quiz
- Remember the previous guidelines for the Rich Content Editor and apply them here.
- When questions include math, use the equation editor to properly format question.
- If questions rely on pictures, be specific with the alternative text.
- Do not be vague in the alternative text, include all necessary details for students with screen readers so that they can fully interact with the question.
Considerations for New Quizzes
New Quizzes is an excellent tool with expanded options for quiz creation. For true accessibility, it is best to avoid certain question types, such as Hot Spot and Categorization, as these question types can be challenging for users with screen readers to navigate. However, if it is necessary to use those question types, provide alternatives for students with accessibility accommodations.
