Clemson Online is excited to announce that four courses have received Quality Matters (QM) certification this spring: YDP 8060, taught by Ann Gillard; EDLL 8250, taught by Philip Grant; and two CPE courses connected to Clemson Extension, Backyard Wildlife Habitat and Carolina Yards. The QM Rubric focuses specifically on course design with an emphasis on student learning. To earn certification, courses must meet standards in eight key areas, including learning objectives, assessments, instructional materials, learning activities, and accessibility. Clemson Online is responsible for conducting initial course reviews internally with the course representative before sending them out for an official review. YDP 8060: Youth Development in the Context of a Global and Diverse Society was reviewed by James Butler and Philip Grant. The course is taught by instructor Ann Gillard, PhD. Gillard wrote about the process,
“Joining the QM Cohort and going through the QM review processes were an absolute game-changer for how I think about course design. The feedback from the team was so respectful, practical, and encouraging that I went from feeling somewhat embarrassed about my course to genuinely proud of it. I’ve already become a full-on QM evangelist with my colleagues. I only wish I had discovered this incredible process sooner!”
EDLL 8250: Law and Ethics for School Leaders was reviewed by Leslie Fuller and Dara Abimbade. The course is taught by instructor Philip D. Grant. After the review, Grant said,
“With all the changes coming to online accessibility, there’s no better time to dive into the QM rubric!”
Backyard Wildlife Habitat is led by subject matter expert Mallory Maher in collaboration with Instructional Designer Joshua Hudak. The internal review was conducted by Leslie Fuller and Millie Tullis. When asked about the process, Maher said,
“The Clemson Online Team was a dream to work with! It was a great process to go through and help make minor improvements to the course to really focus on the user experience so that they get the most out of taking the course”
Carolina Yards was reviewed internally by Sharyn Emery and Leslie Fuller. The course is led by subject matter expert Anaston Porter in collaboration with Instructional Designer Brenda Deardorff. According to Porter,
“The Clemson Online Team made the QM certification process as smooth as possible.”

Vibe Coding for Teaching: Build AI-Powered Learning Tools Without Coding Experience

This workshop introduces faculty to vibe coding as a practical way to design and build AI-powered learning tools for their courses without needing advanced programming skills.
Using examples such as an AI-supported flashcard and tutoring platform, participants will learn how to turn a teaching challenge into a working prototype that supports active recall, Socratic questioning, student explanation, feedback, and mastery tracking.
Faculty will explore how to prompt AI coding tools to create learning apps that move students beyond memorization toward deeper conceptual understanding. By the end of the workshop, participants will draft a simple idea for their own course-based tool and begin developing prompts that could be used to build it.
