Student Brainstorming Tools in Canvas

On July 10th, Digital Learning Strategist ‘dara Abimbade, Ph.D., facilitated a Workshop Wednesday session dedicated to exploring various student brainstorming tools in Canvas. The training explores the importance of collaborative brainstorming in the classroom, discusses best practices, and delves into tools such as Padlet and Trello.

Brainstorming is a collaborative classroom activity with the ultimate goal of generating ideas and solutions to problems. It fosters creativity, organization, and non-judgemental class spaces. Additionally, brainstorming sessions can apply to many kinds of classes across many different disciplines. Brainstorming promotes student engagement, creative thinking, team building, and deeper understanding.

Designing the session according to best practices will set you up for a more productive experience. It is important to set clear objectives and establish time boundaries. Creating a safe environment will enable broader participation. Use visuals (enabled by several of the tools discussed later) to help everyone keep track of various contributions. After the session concludes, follow up with any action items and connect later course components back to the brainstorming session.

Following this outline of best practices, Abimbade discusses four specific brainstorming tools students can utilize in class. These tools include X Mind, Lucid, Trello, and Padlet.

Overall, this session provides audiences with valuable information regarding the benefits of classwide brainstorming sessions and sheds light on a few different computer programs that can streamline the activity.
