Over the 2013 winter break, five AROTC Cadets participated in a philanthropic trip to the village of Democracia, Honduras. MLIII Austin McIlwain traveled with senior Cadets: Jhordan Figueroa, Charlie Hachat, Logan Birchfield, and Blakely Schirtz. The group worked with the Clemson chapter of Students Helping Honduras(SHH). SHH aims to give children from poverty-stricken areas and disadvantaged backgrounds an equal chance to succeed in life by building schools to assist in their education. On this particular excursion, SHH constructed a middle school for the village. The group prepared the foundation for the building, laid cement, and began constructing the walls of the facility. Everyone involved reports a great learning experience and opportunity outside of the traditional winter break activities. The FTB is proud of our Cadets for proving that leadership doesn’t take holiday breaks.
