Homeland Security Professional Opportunities for student Workforce to Experience Research (HS-POWER)

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs sponsors the Professional Opportunities for student Workforce to Experience Research (HS-POWER) Program for undergraduate and graduate students. HS-POWER is open to students majoring in a broad spectrum of homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as well as DHS mission-relevant research areas.

As a participant in the HS-POWER Program, you will participate in quality research experiences at federal research facilities and other HS-STEM focused entities nationwide. This experience will provide you a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent and skills in a variety of settings within the DHS enterprise.  You will also be able to establish connections with DHS professionals that promote long-term relationships between yourself, researchers, DHS personnel and research facilities.

Job Description

This position is for a student pursuing an environmental, chemical, or general engineering degree and/or a degree in a related science. The interns will support various groups within the Environmental organization and will work with a variety and diverse group of engineers and other technical professions. Tasks may include but not limited to update environmental training material, coordinate environmental/regulatory documents, perform data evaluations, and complete environmental field walk downs.

Basic Qualifications
(Quantifiable; e.g. Three Years Experience, Bachelors Degree)

Currently pursuing a BS degree in environmental engineering or science related technical field. Must have at least a 2.5 GPA.

Preferred Qualifications

Basic Computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Biosphere2 Research Experiences for Undergraduates Summer Program

The Biosphere 2 REU provides 10 undergraduates an opportunity to conduct guided research in environmental and Earth systems science at a leading and unique research institution. Students will receive stipends of $6,000 for the 10-week research internship, housing on the Biosphere 2 campus, $500 to cover travel costs to and from Tucson, AZ and a food allowance.

  • GPA of 3.0 or above

Georgia Institute of Technology, School of Mathematics REU

The School of Mathematics at Georgia Tech invites application for undergraduate research in algebra, topology, discrete mathematics, applied mathematics, analysis, and other topics in Summer 2020. A list of past and future projects can be found here.
The program is open to all undergraduate students, regardless of major, who are US citizens, US permanent residents, or are based at a US university on a visa allowing them to legally work for Georgia Tech. The deadline for applications is February 15th, although applications received after the deadline may still be considered. Decisions will be announced by March 20th.
A typical research project lasts approximately 8 weeks, in June and July, although the exact timing is negotiable and can be worked out between students and their mentors. There will be a $5000 total summer stipend, and there is affordable housing available on campus. In most cases no separate travel, housing, or meal funds are provided.
The application should include one reference letter, an unofficial transcript, and a personal statement listing math courses (with grades), computer skills, previous research experiences, preferences for mentors and research subjects, and explaining why the student wishes to participate in the program.
Underrepresented minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Aquatic Chemical Ecology REU Program

Aquatic Chemical Ecology (ACE) at Georgia Tech is a ten-week summer research program supported by the National Science Foundation REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program. ACE at Georgia Tech gives students the opportunity to perform exciting research with faculty in the schools of Biology, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering.
