On June 12th, 2024, Digital Learning Strategist James Butler facilitated a Workshop Wednesday session dedicated to exploring the impacts of AI on online learning and higher education. The training explores key terms related to AI, why AI should be incorporated into class curricula, and methods for responsibly bringing AI into classroom settings.
According to an article published by Shaw & Fox, out of 1,600 postsecondary students surveyed, approximately 50% regularly use generative AI (2023). Butler emphasizes that this number likely will not go down; in fact, it will probably go up as generative AI continues to permeate digital spaces.
After reviewing technical terms associated with AI and exploring statistics about its current use, Butler discusses six strategies to consider when implementing AI into curricula. These strategies include:
- Identify concrete goals for the use of AI.
- Add assessments that require higher-order cognitive skills.
- Aligning learning objectives with AI use.
- Understanding student perspectives.
- Utilize class engagement and discussion.
- Teach with patience and grace.
Overall, this session provides audiences with valuable information regarding AI in online learning and sheds light on the ethical considerations surrounding AI in the classroom.
