Follow Up Friday: AI and Alt Text: Reflecting on Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) took place on Thursday, May 16, 2025, spotlighting digital inclusion and the role of technology in creating more accessible online spaces. Among the trending topics this year was AI-generated alt text. With platforms like Microsoft, Google, and social media sites deploying AI tools that auto-generate image descriptions, many instructors are wondering: Can we trust AI to make our courses more accessible?

The short answer: AI is a helpful starting point—but it’s not a full solution. These tools often describe what is in the image (e.g., “a person standing on a stage”) but may miss why the image matters in context. For example, a stock image of a speaker at a podium could be relevant to a lecture on persuasive communication—or just visual filler. AI can’t always tell the difference.

As we reflect on GAAD, it’s worth remembering that accessibility is a process, not a checkbox. If you’re using AI-generated alt text in your course content:

  • Review it for accuracy and relevance.
  • Customize it for educational context.
  • Avoid generic phrases like “image may contain…” which leave learners guessing.

Let GAAD be your reminder: inclusion requires human oversight. AI can assist—but your expertise makes learning truly accessible.
