The first week of class carries more weight than it often gets credit for, especially in online or hybrid environments. Without in-person cues or casual interactions, students in digital classrooms rely on structured signals to feel welcome, supported, and motivated.
As the first week wraps up, here are three practical ways you can still spark engagement and set the tone for the term:
1. Lead with Human Connection
Start with a simple introduction activity. Whether it’s a Flip video, a discussion prompt with a photo, or a “digital name tent,” low-stakes participation helps students feel visible early on, and gets them comfortable with the course platform.
2. Be Tangibly Present
Post an announcement, respond to a few student posts, or drop a quick thank-you message in your LMS. These small touches go a long way in making students feel like they’re in an active learning space rather than a static content repository.
3. Model Course Values Early
If your course emphasizes collaboration, flexibility, or self-reflection, incorporate that into the first activity or assignment. How you structure Week 1 signals what students can expect from the course—not just in content, but in classroom culture.
As you head into the weekend, take a few minutes to scan your LMS discussions or inbox. Have students had a chance to connect, participate, and get a sense of momentum? A short message or a single encouraging comment can help ensure they return to Week 2 feeling engaged and enthusiastic!
