Follow Up Friday: Canvas Accessibility Week Recap

Clemson Online hosted its annual Canvas Accessibility Week from February 17-20, 2025, with sessions designed to enhance digital accessibility in courses and help instructors integrate accessible practices into their teaching. Here’s a quick recap of the sessions:

Introduction to Digital Accessibility, presented by Digital Learning Strategist Millie Tullis, provided a high-level overview of digital accessibility. Tullis discussed key components of accessibility, Clemson’s accessibility initiatives, and strategies for improving digital access in course materials.

Accessibility and Canvas Course Organization, presented by Digital Learning Strategist Leslie Fuller, Ph.D., focused on organizing Canvas courses in an accessible way. Fuller highlighted the benefits of structured course design and demonstrated best practices for improving navigation and usability.

Making Complex Images Accessible, presented by Digital Learning Strategist James Butler, explored how to make complex images more accessible. Butler discussed different types of complex images, best practices for writing alt-text, and methods for describing images using HTML and audio.

Creating Accessible PowerPoint Presentations, presented by Accessibility Operations Assistant Browning Blair, covered strategies for designing accessible PowerPoint presentations. Blair identified common accessibility issues and demonstrated techniques for remediating them.

Canvas Accessibility Checkers, presented by Quality Matters Coordinator Hansen Wetsel, explained how to use Canvas’s built-in accessibility checkers. Wetsel covered where to find these tools, when to use them, and demonstrated both the Rich Content Editor (RCE) checker and the YuJa Panorama checker.

Checking External Content for Accessibility, presented by Digital Learning Manager Sharyn Emery, Ph.D., addressed accessibility challenges with external content such as PDFs and YouTube videos. Emery discussed common accessibility barriers and demonstrated various remediation techniques.

New Quizzes in Canvas and Accessibility, presented by Digital Learning Strategist ‘dara Abimbade, Ph.D., explored accessibility considerations for Canvas’s New Quizzes feature. Abimbade provided guidance on implementing New Quizzes in course design and demonstrated key accessibility features.
