Follow Up Friday: Creating Accessible Materials

Monday’s blog covered how to create accessible, aesthetically pleasing course materials. Canva can be a great place to get ideas for design, design graphics for presentations, or create graphics for class. However, it is recommended that you turn your creations into accessible designs by recreating them in a more accessible software.

Implementing QR Codes Into Your Designs

While this process is incredibly important in creating accessible materials for your class, there are still a few things to look out for when designing materials, including the use of QR codes.

If you want viewers of your design to access a specific link, or if you are printing your design, you may be inclined to include a QR code. QR codes are often a more visually appealing way to get the job done than simply pasting the desired link. For live sessions, they can provide an easier way for a wide audience to access the recommended site.

However, it is important to use QR codes wisely, as they can be inaccessible to certain viewers, like blind viewers. Because of this, you should still include a descriptive, clickable link to the QR code’s destination and a visible, short, and unlinked URL of the same destination near the QR code. When creating the clickable link, be sure to used the long form of the URL. And, to get the short URL, use a tool like bit.ly or tinyurl.com.
