As you prepare your Canvas course for the upcoming Fall semester, don’t forget: accessibility starts with the visuals. That beautiful banner you added to your homepage? It needs alt text.
Why?
Alt text ensures that students using screen readers can understand the purpose of an image. If your banner includes important text (like your course name or a welcome message), it should be communicated in the alt text.
Best practices:
- If your banner is purely decorative, mark it as decorative in the image settings.
- If your banner contains relevant or noteworthy information, write a short but clear description (e.g., “Welcome banner with course title: ENGL 1030 Academic Writing”).
Taking a moment to add alt text supports a more inclusive learning environment and sets the tone for an accessible course experience. Together, we can make Clemson a more accessible place for everyone, both instructors and students alike!
