South Carolina Review author James Ulmer’s new book of ghost stories, The Highway That Leads Beyond the World, was published in June by Bridge House Publications, a British press specializing in dark literary fiction and mystery. The lead-off story in the collection, “The Far Hill,” first appeared in The South Carolina Review in the Spring 2020 issue.
Ulmer’s previous collection, The Fire Doll, was awarded the George Garrett Fiction Prize from Texas Review Press. Recent stories have appeared in The South Carolina Review, The Saturday Evening Post, Arkansas Review, Descant, and elsewhere. Ulmer is Professor of English at Southern Arkansas University.
The house in the cover photo, the Maud Crawford House in Camden, Arkansas, is the scene of an unexplained disappearance well known in Arkansas lore and is the setting of the story “Dietrich’s Witness” in The Highway That Leads Beyond the World.
