Eric will be answering any questions and giving tips and tricks for navigating the unknown after our grad school lives at Clemson. This will largely be a question and answer session, but the focus will be on visioning your future, writing a personal vision statement, setting goals, and finding your professional path in life.

Top-Down Processing Hike

On Saturday March 2, 2016 all willing, able, and semi-rugged members of CU-HFES hiked down from the highest point in South Carolina. The hike started at the top of Sassafras Mountain and included a total of 5 miles of the 77-mile Foothills Trail that runs through the mountains along the SC-NC border. We descended approximately 2000 feet.

Atlanta Science Festival

We had so much fun talking to kids at the Atlanta Science Festival! Our chapter thinks it is so important to get children involved and excited about science. We were so happy to once again put on a joint booth with GA Tech’s HFES Chapter! We presented pictures of bad designs and had the children find what was wrong with the pictures and how they could redesign them to fix the problems.

“Swaying the audience: Postural precursors of motion sickness”

Hi everyone!

Please join us this Friday (March 25th) at 2:00pm in Brackett 419 for a very exciting guest speaker, L. James (Jay) Smart, Jr., Ph.D
from Miami University!

“Swaying the audience: Postural precursors of motion sickness”

Synopsis: In recent years there has been increasing evidence that motion sickness should be thought of as a movement disorder rather than a perceptual disorder. Previous research (Smart et al. 2014) has shown that the postural sway of people who will eventually become motion sick exhibit different sway patterns than people who remain well prior to symptoms. Our current research is examining whether there is something inherently disruptive about these sway patterns and can they be used to predict motion sickness in real time

Dr. Rick Tyrrell’s Professional Development Talk

Join us this Friday, February 26, 2016 at 2pm in Brackett 419 for Dr. Rick Tyrrell’s Professional Development Talk on Forensic Consulting.

Rick

Prof. Rick Tyrrell occasionally serves as an expert witness in the litigation of traffic crashes. In this week’s HFDG he will discuss his experiences in the world of forensic consulting. He will describe a few typical cases and then will discuss some of the many issues that become relevant when an academic who does research on safety gets involved in legal disputes that often involve injuries, fatalities, and millions of dollars. Because of the variety of topics that could be discussed, he hopes to tailor the discussion to the questions of the group. In other words, this will be a group discussion, not a presentation.

HFES Tours BMW

We had an amazing time at the BMW tour on February 16th! Unfortunately due to policies these were the only pictures we were able to get from the experience. This tour is definitely a must-do for anyone who was unable to attend.
