The University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) invites applications for a non-tenure track, fiscal-year (12-month) position as Assistant Director for Outreach and Education Programs.  The successful applicant will be located at the SREL in Aiken, S.C. and will report to the Director of the SREL. This position will be 0.70 EFT in administration and 0.30 EFT in outreach.

Administrative Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will serve as an Assistant Director for Outreach and Education Programs for the SREL and will support the SREL Director in a variety of administrative duties, including: Oversight of SREL’s science-based outreach and public relations program, including supervision of staff, budget development, creation and evaluation of content, coordination of programmatic activities with UGA, state, and/or federal guidelines, and strategic planning; Coordination of SREL’s undergraduate experiential learning and graduate research programs, including supervision of support staff, budget development, facilitation of faculty led education programs, engagement of collaborating universities, federal, and/or state partners, and strategic planning; Provision of administrative oversight to ensure compliance of all SREL outreach and education programs with all applicable university, federal, and/or state requirements.  This position also is expected to engage in significant interaction with colleagues and students across the scientific disciplines represented at SREL, UGA and the broader academic community

Outreach Responsibilities:  This position assists as needed with development and delivery of SREL outreach and public relations content to the general public, including oversight and validation of outreach materials developed for public audiences, participation in the SREL portion of the Savannah River Site Public Tour Program and large outreach events. Professional service to groups such as state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, professional societies, and the public also is expected.

Qualifications:  Applicants must have a BS degree (MS preferred) in an appropriate field (ecological or environmental sciences) and three years of experience in administration of outreach and/or education programs or similar activities. Applicant must have graduated from an accredited college or university with major course work in any area of Ecology, Environmental Sciences, or similar disciplines and have considerable background in coordination of outreach, education, or extension programs. Previous evidence of supervisory duties required and experience with grant writing desired.  The candidate should have the ability to interact with colleagues and students from a diversity of disciplines related to the research programs conducted by the SSREL faculty, students, and staff.

Savannah River Ecology Laboratory: The successful candidate will be located at the SREL in Aiken, SC.  The SREL is a research unit of the University of Georgia located on the 300 mi² Savannah River Site, a Department of Energy facility near Aiken, SC. With a staff of over 190 faculty members, postdocs, research professionals, technicians, and graduate students, the laboratory pursues basic and applied research at multiple levels of ecological organization, from atoms to ecosystems. SREL also provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate research training, and service to the community through environmental outreach. Throughout its 70+ year history SREL has strived to acquire and communicate knowledge that contributes to sound ecological stewardship.
