How to Create Rubrics In Canvas

Using Canvas rubrics is an easy way to communicate expectations for assignments throughout the course. Rubrics create a clear pathway for providing specific feedback.

In your Canvas course navigate menu on the side ribbon, you will find the Rubrics button. If you don’t see the Rubrics button, click the settings tab. Find navigation and drag the Rubrics tab to the top of the page where it will be available for students to view.

Once on the Rubrics page, click add a new rubric. You can choose a title for the rubric and begin editing the criteria for the rubric. The criteria is broken down into sections based on what you are grading students on. If the rubric has five different grading scales associated with it then there will be five different sections.

The “Edit rating” button is where all of the point value information can be included for each criteria section. Create a new rating button for each section of the rubric. For example, if you want one of the criteria sections to have 3 different corresponding point values, then add a rating three different times. Once you finish that you will have one grading criteria with the associated rating scale. You can then move through and add the other section to complete the rubric.

Once the rubric is created you can add it to an assignment. When you create an assignment you will see a “+ Rubric” button to add the rubric to the intended assignment. You will the be able to use the rubric to grade each assignment and input a grade.
