On November 8th, Accessibility Operations Assistant Browning Blair facilitated a Quick Hits presentation dedicated to understanding the basics of Canvas’ accessibility checkers. The presentation offers a concise overview and demonstration of each accessibility checker, and touches on the importance of providing accessible course materials to students.
Blair explains that Canvas’ accessibility checkers—the Rich Content checker and YuJa Panorama— are useful for instructors as they can ensure that course uploads and online course pages are fully accessible. Using accessibility checkers such as these can help ease the stress that comes with video captioning, document remediation, and other somewhat tedious accessibility fixes. Blair then demonstrates how to use each checker for basic content remediation. For example, they outline how to use Panorama to add document titles and validate a PDF’s reading order, as well as how to use the Rich Content checker to remediate lists and add alt text to course images.
Overall, this session provides audiences with important information regarding the necessity of utilizing Canvas’ accessibility checkers for course development and offers instructors helpful suggestions for how to get started with these tools.
