The New Canvas Rich Content Editor

December 7, 2020

A big change is coming to Canvas: the new Rich Content Editor (RCE) will automatically replace the current RCE in all courses on December 16, 2020. The RCE is the space where instructors upload and insert content for all of the following Canvas tools:

  • Announcements
  • Assignments
  • Discussions
  • Pages
  • Quizzes
  • Syllabus

The following changes and features are included with the new Rich Content Editor:

  • The single-line toolbar includes a condensed, more intuitive look. Toolbar menus are grouped by common icons and interactions with drop-down menus.

  • The Rich Content Editor expands to the full width of the browser. If the browser is not expanded to fit the full width of the toolbar, the toolbar displays an Options menu that includes the remaining toolbar items.

  • The content sidebar only displays when linking to other parts of Canvas, accessing Canvas files, or accessing uploaded media.

  • Files, images, and media can be uploaded using drag and drop. The image upload feature includes an Unsplash search, which will help you find free to use images for your course.

  • The Keyboard shortcut, Accessibility Checker, and HTML Editor icons have moved to the bottom right corner of the editor next to the word count and the window can be resized using the Move handle
