BCHM students represent at BCMES annual conference

In late October three junior biochemistry students represented the department at the annual Biomedical Engineering Society Meeting (BMES) in Baltimore, MD: James Marturano, Kathleen Doran and Addison Schaff (pictured left to right).

Established in 1968, BMES strives to be the professional home for biomedical engineers to assist you in navigating your career path and striving to make the work of biomedical engineering and those in allied fields, more visible. Their mission is to promote a collaborative and inclusive community to advance human health through education, discovery and translation, which drives their research and educational initiatives, including webinars, chapter programs and meetings.

Each student presented a poster of their research findings with their partner.

James Marturano, biochemistry
“Single measurement of DUB activity in multiple myeloma to identity subpopulations based on enzyme activity”

Katleen Doran, biochemistry
“Development of a 3D-Printed Device to Study How Bacteria Alters the 3D Migration of Breast Cancer Cells”

Addison Schaaf, biochemistry
“Co-culture between ER + breast cancer and bacteria using a 3-D printed platform to recreate the tumor microbiome”

3rd Annual Cell Biology of Eukaryotic Pathogens Meeting a Success

Over seventy attendees from around the southeast gathered to learn the latest about research on the molecular biology and biochemistry of some of the leading killers on the planet. The meeting keynote, given By Dr. Michel Grigg of the National Institutes of Health, explored the unusual genetic diversity of human pathogens from around the world, seeking answers to the differences in disease outcomes seen amongst closely related parasites. Society for In Vitro Biology Meeting

Graduate students Ning Yuan and Peipei Wu attended the Society for In Vitro Biology (SIVB) meeting in Tucson, AZ on May 30-June 3, and presented their research. Ning Yuan received a SIVB student travel grant and was among the top five in student oral presentation competition.

American Society of Plant Biologists Meeting

Graduate students Shuangrong Yuan and Ning Yuan attended the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) national meeting in Minneapolis, MN on July 19-23. Shuangrong Yuan received an ASPB student travel grant to present her research in a poster. Ning Yuan was invited to give an oral presentation about his research.

Third Annual Cell Biology of Eukaryotic Pathogens Symposium

EPIC and EPIC Scholars are hosting our Third Annual Cell Biology of Eukaryotic Pathogens Symposium on Thursday and Friday, October 22nd-23rd. Come join us for two days of the latest research on Eukaryotic Pathogens from around the region, with a keynote presentation by Dr. Michael Grigg of the NIH.
