Clemson Online: Where Tech and Teaching Meet

Follow Up Friday: Applying the Community of Inquiry Framework in Online Learning

Chart showing the community of inquiry framework components.

On June 4, Digital Learning Strategist Leslie Fuller, PhD, led an informative presentation titled Applying the Community of Inquiry Framework in Online Learning. This training introduced participants to the Community of Inquiry Framework, a theoretical education model that emphasizes the importance of cognitive, social, and teaching presence in learning environments.

Fuller began her session by defining relevant terms and discussing the framework’s theoretical background. She then takes the time to discuss cognitive, social, and teaching presence independently, and discusses how to increase each type of presence in digital settings. Finally, Fuller wraps up the session by presenting ways to combine each type of presence for students via strategies like project-based learning and peer reviews.

Overall, this session provides useful information on how to effectively and efficiently create a positive digital learning community.
