Clemson Online: Where Tech and Teaching Meet

Quality Matters Certified Courses

Clemson Online is proud to announce the official Quality Matters (QM) certification of three more courses this year: EDIS 9300: Rural Education, taught by Philip Grant; ENGL 2140: American Literature, taught by Jennifer Forsberg; and BIOL 8440: Understanding the Human Body, taught by Lisa Wagner. The QM Rubric focuses on the design of the course, emphasizing student learning. To achieve certification, courses must meet expectations in eight different areas, including learning objectives, assessments, learning activities, and accessibility. Each course underwent an internal review before being submitted for official QM review. These courses are now listed in the Quality Matters directory of certified courses.

Dr. Grant

EDIS 9300: Rural Education was reviewed by Digital Learning Strategists James Butler and Dara Abimbade. Reflecting on the process, Grant stated:

“I align my virtual classes to the QM rubric because I want students to concentrate on the content rather than the organization of the course.”

ENGL 2140: American Literature was reviewed by Leslie Fuller and Millie Tullis. Forsberg’s course earned certification on September 12, 2024.

Dr. Wagner

BIOL 8440: Understanding the Human Body was reviewed by Digital Learning Manager Sharyn Emery and Digital Learning Strategist James Butler . Regarding the QM process, Wagner shared that:

“The QM process was valuable in uncovering the alignment in my course content, assessments, and learning objectives that support and enhance the student learning experience.”

Quality Matters is the global leader in effective online course design. Its research-based and collaborative review process helps produce well-designed, rigorous online courses that align with Clemson’s educational mission.

QM reviews are now eligible for submission as evidence of teaching effectiveness in the Faculty Success Annual Reporting system. Instructors should consult their departments to determine how QM reviews will be recognized.

Instructors interested in a QM review for their course or in learning more about online course quality can visit the QM at Clemson Canvas website or contact Clemson Online.
