Special thanks to Dr. Dan Warner (Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences) and his wife, Patty, for providing this valuable information.
On April 30, 2020, Skip Eisiminger, Professor Emeritus of English gave a very informational online presentation to emeritus faculty. His presentation, “For the Birds” provided an informal celebration and enticement to ornithology by a “bird reader.” While Skip has no formal training in the study of birds, he does

take most opportunities to watch his feathered friends especially on “Nat. Geo.” as much as he dislikes that abbreviation. Mostly, Dr, Eisiminger just reads about birds who continue to amaze him. “For the Birds,” was the crème de la crème of his “bird readings” and assiduous collecting habits over the last forty years. The presentation was attended by numerous faculty and as always involved a lively Q &A session! The Emeritus College appreciates Skip’s enthusiasm for presenting in the new format. Dr. Margaree Crosby- First African American Professor Emerita at Clemson University
Clemson’s over 800 emeritus faculty have all contributed in so many ways to not only Clemson but the community, the greater good and throughout the world. Mark Anthony Williams Jr. has agreed to assist one such faculty member in her quest to record her amazing history of contributions. Dr. Margaree Crosby, Professor Emerita of Curriculum and Instruction, has paved the way for progress throughout her lifetime. As a student at South Carolina State University, she actively protested social issues most notable the July 16, 1960 sit-in at the downtown Greenville Library System. She and seven of her peers (including her good friend Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr.) selected a book and sat down to read, only to swiftly be confronted by local police resulting in her and the others arrest. The “Greenville 8’s” case elevated through the courts and the library was later closed and reopened as an integrated public facility.
Dr. Crosby served Clemson University with dignity, thoughtfulness and her attitude for positive change. She has championed mentorship as a service we should all provide to our community and her dedication to this goal can be found in the students and young people she guided throughout the years. While Dr. Crosby has had some health challenges in the recent years, that has not slowed down her ability to instill change. In its 100 year history, she went on to become the first female member of the Board of Trustees at the Greenville Hospital System.
We look forward to Dr. Crosby’s biography and cannot wait to read more about a life well-lived. Bravo Dr. Crosby!!
The Emeritus College had a full schedule of events for this spring to take place at the College. Given recent events, we have had to rethink about how we can best deliver these events to our faculty in a safe, engaging manner! With the Governor closing all P-K schools and universities through April 30th, plus the President’s guidelines to continue social distancing through the end of May means that will continue to be working differently. The Emeritus College has developed opportunities to continue to host live programming for our members utilizing the videoconferencing format, ZOOM. The first live webinar is planned for April 9th at 10:00am with Lili Klar and Rodger Bishop of the Clemson Libraries, using the Zoom platform.
ClickHERE for a prepared resource sheet on the Zoom format. We can manage 300 participants in the Zoom platform, so please join us. We will continue to add programming each week! If you would like to provide a program for emeritus faculty via the webinar format, please contact Nicci Hanewald (nherman@clemson.edu), so we can make sure and get the program on the schedule. We also are exploring additional avenues for interactions through social media and will let you know when those go online.
The College looks forward to providing engaging program for our faculty during this time!! Stay safe and healthy!
